Strep throat with BE and MAC
I have both BE and MAC and was diagnosed with strep throat and put on doxycycline for 10 days. The nebulizer treatments hurt my throat! (My pulmonary doctor said to stop airway clearance for 10 days).
Now today I woke up with a head cold and hoping it doesn’t go to chest. I feel like since getting BE & MAC I am so much more susceptible to catching everything. Anyone else?

Personally, I have never heard of a BE pulmonologist say to stop with airway clearance especially when you're dealing with an exacerbation. That's the time to step up not decrease or stop airway clearance.
Last December I developed a cold (after years of being cold virus free thanks to the pandemic and masking). At that time, I had a difficult time bringing up sputum, and I skipped a few treatments here and there. Big mistake. The cold went to my chest and I developed a pneumonia.
I understand that the nebulizer treatments may hurt your throat, especially with 7% saline. Have you tried sipping some herbal tea or hot/warm water with honey while nebulizing and taking frequent breaks?
The last thing I'll say is that if you feel the doxycycline is not doing the trick for the strep throat, be sure to speak up to your doctor. I hope you feel better soon.

1 ReactionYes, my Doctor is a Mayo Pulmonary physician.
@scoop I just wanted to say that the doxycycline did nothing for my strep-I only got worse over the week. I am almost 72 yrs old and had a reaction to Penicillin when I was in high school. Mayo had me to a 2 day challenge and turns out I can now take penicillin-but my GP wouldn’t prescribe it, even though I had the card that said I could. I spent a couple of days trying to get a different med for strep-I have Long QT so that is always a problem with meds. She finally gave me the penicillin yesterday and hoping it works.
