Stopping Tymlos

Posted by mdm30 @mdm30, 4 days ago

I was given two different perspectives on urgency to begin a new therapy after completing 2 years on Tymlos. One Dr. siad that I could wait a month before starting another treatment after Tymlos (while we wait for apporval for Evenity) while another Dr. suggested I start on a short term, 1 month, dose of Fosamax for these few weeks while we wait for approval to start Evenity. Not sure what to do with this conflict of information. Others have similar expereiences where there was a wait time between Tymlos and another med.?

With Tymlos you inject the drug daily yourself. Clicks refers to turning the dial to set the dose. 8 clicks is full dose. It is possible to start with a smaller dose in the beginning.
Some but not all of the side effects possible: hypercalcemia, dizziness, low blood pressure..

Can you explain what is meant by clicks and is this a daily injection self administered? Are there any warnings in a reason not to take this medication? For example, heart problems

Tymlos comes in a pre-loaded pen with 30 doses; you administer one dose everyday. The prescribed dose is 80 mcg, and you set the dose by turning a knob from 0 to 80. The knob is ratcheted in 10 mcg increments, so as you turn it you hear a click at each 10 mcgs. So, 80 is 8 clicks. Folks who find the full dose to be too strong or to have too many unpleasant side effects often lower their dose by just dialing to a lower number, ie a lower number of clicks, from 1 to 8.

If you go to tymlos.com you can find the warnings and contraindications. I don't recall heart problems being one of them, but I wouldn't have paid attention to that one myself. My concern was cancer risks, but they state that cancer was found only in lab rats, not in humans, so.....

@daisylou I didn't see your reply when I wrote mine 🙂 Didn't mean to be repetitious.

I used the max, but some people here definitely needed to start lower, and some were not able to ever get to eight.

One method is to start low, let's say 3, and if that goes well, try 4 the next day, and so on. Find out how far you can go.

I just started my Tymlos 3 days ago. Based on what I read here, I did 4 clicks first night, 5 second and third. Tonight I will do 6 and take a week to get to 8. So far not noticing any side effects other than getting slightly more tired than usual in the evening.

I injected the full dose from the very beginning, as I didn't know there was an option to lower the dose on my own. I had very unpleasant side effects that subsided for about 6 weeks. After that, everything was fine, with exception to developing high blood calcium levels at 10.5 months. I had to stop using Tymlos at that point.

I believe that you can still get a good effect even at less than a full dose, so if you can't make it all the way to 8, you should still be ok. You sound like you're doing great.
