STOP! Don't do this if you have osteoporosis

Posted by isabelle7 @isabelle7, Jul 7, 2024

I am starting this thread hoping people will post things they've done that they have regretted, for one reason or another, when suffering from osteoporosis.

I'm going to start the conversation with a list of things we've learned already, and we are newbies!

1. Lift objects heavier than recommended by your physician (for my husband, that means nothing heavier than 5 pounds right now, with 3 fractures).

2. Don't bend at the waist! He got a fracture bending to empty the dishwasher.

3. Be cautious when driving - avoid rough roads, bumps, and go very slow over speed bumps.

4. We had planned to go on a boating tour (on a commercial fishing boat) on the ocean. After seeing a boat rocking and bouncing over choppy water we decided not to go.

5. Do not slouch when sitting in a chair or couch. If you're going to rest for any period of time on a couch elevate your legs (per our physical therapist).

6. Do not try any exercises until you have cleared it with your doctor, especially before your doctor confirms your fracture is stable.)

Please add to the discussion. I think this could be useful to people, especially people new to this.

It is not likely that a calcium supplement reversed osteoporosis. Advacal is like other supplements in that it has calcium, K2, D3, and some minerals. There's nothing special about it. It helps to make sure that you're getting those things, but it is not a cure.

Osteoporosis is usually not an issue of insufficient calcium. The bone remodeling process in the body gets out of balance. There can be a number of causes - and something the cause its unknown. I wish it were as easy as buying a pill on Amazon. 🙂

thankyou !
I was feeling miserable about not taking supplements much earlier in life.

my doctor just prescribed prolia. he didn't mention any other treatment.
I had read about evenity so I asked him about it. he felt that it was a new drug in comparison to prolia. prolia was a tried and tested in India and there wasn't much data about evenity. he didn't mention anything about the rebound effect of getting of it or a second line of treatment.

chatgpt advises zoledronic acid post prolia to lock in the gains. i'm worried about starting it and being unable to get off it.
I had not heard of tymlos

Its always important in my view to do our own research. You'll have a chance on this forum to read about others experiences and what they have learned.

Regarding teriparatide and breast cancer, this is what Google AI summarizes. Do not assume this is the definitive answer but it may be helpful:

"Teriparatide is an osteoporosis treatment that promotes bone formation and has been shown to be safe in breast cancer models, not causing tumor growth or bone destruction. It may be beneficial for patients with breast cancer who are at risk of osteoporosis due to their treatment.

Teriparatide and Breast Cancer
Overview of Teriparatide
Teriparatide (TPTD) is a medication primarily used to treat osteoporosis. It works by promoting bone formation and is often considered for patients at risk of fractures.
Safety in Breast Cancer Models
Recent studies indicate that teriparatide may be safe for use in patients with breast cancer, particularly those with bone metastases. Research has shown that TPTD does not promote tumor growth or cause bone destruction in breast cancer models. This suggests that it could be a viable option for managing bone health in breast cancer patients, especially since treatments for breast cancer can increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Impact on Bone Health
Breast cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and hormone therapy, can lead to decreased bone density and increased fracture risk. Teriparatide's ability to stimulate bone formation may help counteract these effects, making it a potential therapeutic option for maintaining bone health in women undergoing breast cancer treatment.
Conclusion
Teriparatide shows promise as a safe treatment for improving bone health in breast cancer patients, particularly those with bone metastases. Its role in managing osteoporosis in this population is an important area of ongoing research.

Thanks @prarysky. This information is reassuring, since I took Forteo and now take a half dose of Tymlos.

thankyou for cautioning me about drug sequencing. if i've got you right then prolia should be a follow up to tymlos or evenity.

my information comes from chatgpt and it suggests to use zoledronic acid post prolia to lock in the gains!

most doctors do not educate you it seems.

I am not a medical professional just another woman with osteoporosis who has been on alendronate, forteo, evenity an now prolia to lock in gains . I will only take 2 prolia injections! I will see what seems to be the next move but most likely a lower dose of reclast to counter Prolia rebound then a bone builder. The research seems to suggest that after two injections of prolia it is much easier to manage the rebound effect.

I'm really grateful for all your responses..I have realised that I need to also educate myself more before just starting such medications but wasn't getting being able to do it properly. thankyou for sharing your personal treatment. I will ask my doctor about these to take a better call going forward.

@shail, This is the first time I've heard that you are not supposed to take Teriparatide if your mother had breast cancer. Is there something in the literature or did your physician think this? Do you know the reason?

after your query I found an article posted in Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA, 2010 - which cautions against using teriparatide with individuals who have a history of cancer.
Also Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) task force report on bone health in cancer care explicitly states that "teriparatide is best avoided in patients with a history of malignancy prone to metastasize to bone."
Being a new member mayo clinic doesn't allow me to share the link presently.
