Stem cell trial for neuro optica myelitis

I've read about a 2009 study using stem cells to treat neuro optica myelitis. Apparently, the treatment was helpful in repairing the spine, even allow wheelchair bound patients to walk.. Since then--nothing. Is there some reason researchers have abandoned this type of research?
