Statin Causing Neuropathy?
Hi everybody,
Statin is mentioned as a possible, though uncommon, cause of Neuropathy. Has anyone on this group found out that their Neuropathy was caused by Statin?
- Did you stop taking statin? If so, did it alleviate your neuropathy symptoms?
- Was it possible to switch to a different medication , which did not cause Neuropathy?
- Are there any differences between the symptoms of Neuropathy caused by Statin, compared to other causes?

@hamiducla, My PCP wanted me to go on a statin to lower my cholesterol numbers but I had a discussion with her and decided to work on some lifestyle changes first to get the numbers down. It's really important that you talk with your doctor before you stop taking statins. You might find the following discussion helpfull:

Have you talked to your doctor to see if there is an alternative medication with lower risks for causing neuropathy symptoms?

3 ReactionsThere are cholesterol medications that are not statins. Statins are out dated. I use Levqio. Mine is genetic. I get one shot every six months

4 ReactionsI stopped taking it for a few weeks and there was no change in my pain and burning.
@amventim1 I don’t think stopping it will make the neuropathy pain go away once you’ve got the neuropathy but I am among those who thinks it contributes to it so I stopped mine and so far my labs are ok.

1 Reaction@hamiducla I’m not sure if statin is making my PN worse or not. I just got a script for a new drug called Lipfendra….it’s formulated similar to Rapatha however it’s in pill form. I haven’t tried it yet.

Been put on 30 mg statin after bypass. Some specialists do not really care about any side effects. Previously for many years took ezetrol 10 mg. Apparently not as effective as statin but with little side effects. Gp switched me to taking a combination tablet of 5mg statin/10mg ezetrol.

I’m a staunch believer that my statin use has caused or at least contributed to my DPN.
I was on atorvastatin for years. I heard about the fact that it could be contributing to the DPN so I started researching it and found a large community of believers that are convinced that it was caused by big Pharma pushing it on the doctors to put their patients on it. They even went as far as to get the acceptable range of HDL, LDL triglyceride and total cholesterol all lowered. So the doctors could say oh you need to be on this drug.
When I told my doctor, I was gonna wean off of it which I did now I don’t take it at all. She was not happy with me. I told her I said start researching it read the history on it. You’ll see I’m right.
This of course, is just my opinion.
