Starting Radiation tomorrow
Hi All, starting radiation tomorrow. 38 sessions. Other than full bladder, empty bowels, and get there on time, any suggestions from those who have been through this?
Also, I’m on Firmagon and abiraterone. No side effects yet. I watch my blood pressure, still good.

I had about the same number of sessions of salvage radiation 12 years ago. I had no side effects at all, Went to work right after treatment never noticed anything. They did give me a Lupron shot before the radiation, but I had no side effects from it. Starting three years later I’ve been on ADT for nine years and there are side effects, I just didn’t notice him when I had the first six months shot.
Abiraterone is another story. It resulted in me having to take three different blood pressure medicines twice a day. I never had any blood pressure problems before that. It also caused me a lot of extra hot flashes. None of that has anything to do with radiation.
I start on Sept 29...around 40 sessions..going tomorrow to get rectal spacer...etc.. sounds like might have been fun with a couple of co eds yrs ago.. I assume I will have guys with thick fingers probing ..I just hope they dont leave any orange work cones in there..
I am a bit over two months on orgovyx..could not tolerate erleada ( who picks out those names..???) and will start nubeqa later this week..my PSA dropped from 70 to .05 in 7 weeks...they said that was very good news !
Gleason 8 2 lymph nodes in pelvic area..diagnosed in JUne '25..no real systmes..a bit of fatigue and 3-4 nocturnal piss/night..
Fridge full of vitamins, worked out 3-5 times a week.. never thought I would ever be in cancer club
Hopefully your provider will offer you "sedation" for the procedure to inject the rectal spacer. Mine did and it was wonderful.
After the procedure was over I recall having a conversation with the provider about how nice the sedation was. In fact, I specifically remember asking him whether we could "do it again".
John - BEST OF LUCK !!! 👍😃✨🍀 May your cancer be zapped to smithereens 🙌 !
Write us how it went 😎 and I am keeping fingers crossed that you have ZERO pesky side effects during treatment 🤞🌺
Avoid foods that give you gas. Having a gas bubble near your prostate will mess up the alignment. For me those foods where anything with artificial sweeteners, like sorbitol, erythritol.
You seem to have it all down - you’re good to go. One thing to add- the changing room and treatment rooms at Sloan are freeeeezing!!
They have to be since much heat is generated by all those machines.
I told my buddy to wear a heavy sweatshirt under his hospital gown and he told me it was great advice. Guys were literally shivering in there!

Thanks Marc, I no longer have a prostate as of May 22, but advice is still good since they detected gas in my intestines during simulation and I had to pass gas before simulation could finalize. Thanks! 🙂
Good luck! You may want to cut down on acidy drinks and spicy foods. I had burning urination after radiation and a blander diet and no drinks like OJ helped a lot. It was tough to do--I can go all the way up to ghost peppers--but worth it!
I had 23 IMRT sessions...no issues. Fast, painless and went to work daily. Gel spacer procedure was a bit humiliating with no real sedation and me spread eagle with 3 female nurses observing the procedure. No one forewarned me that I would be fully aware and receive no anesthesia.
Like the episode of Seinfeld..Girl sees George's package after he has been swimming...and then they get off into shrinkage factor.. with Elaine..who finally says " I dont know hoe you guys walk around with those things..!"
After my biopsy with 2 nurses in attendance, I guess I can handle this..later today !
