Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)

Posted by jacque6977 @jacque6977, Feb 22, 2017

My wife, after years of suffering from debilitating nausea and fatigue, has finally been diagnosed with SIBO as confirmed by a hydrogen breath test. It is estimated the bacteria has had at least two years to grow and may be well established. She has started on Xifaxan, at $35 per pill, but it is estimated that elimination of the SIBO may take up to six months. Her day now starts with her waking up with nausea and when she has a cup of tea and toast in the morning she gets sick within fifteen minutes thereafter. Her sickness is accompanied by violent belching, and at times she regurgitates liquid vile. The only drug she has for nausea is Zofran which does nothing for her. Are there any other SIBO sufferers that are experiencing the same symptoms, and what are you taking to reduce the nausea?

@rubyric

Here is the name of the lab that did my test, maybe they can guide you: Commonwealth Laboratories, LLC. They are located in Belfast, ME 04915-4033. Here is a number listed on my “billing”, but they might also be able to help: 978-599-1380. I would try that number and ask for customer service. I have to warn you, without insurance, my bill would have been $6,540.80. I ended up paying 108.79. We lost our insurance two months back and now we are trying to get another company. My gastro doctor had the kit in his office, so I am not sure how much help I can give you.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME “WHAT TO EAT???” I am so tied of hearing “eat this, no don’t, eat that, OH no that bad for you”…..no one seems to know what diet to follow. The FODMAP diet is a joke!! Half the stuff on there I can eat due to my re-flux and the other half is horrible! I know to avoid sugar (SIBO) and acid foods (re-flux), so what’s left?? I am going to try the gluten free for now UNLESS someone clues me in on another way to go….so frustrated!!!

After battling acid reflux for years the best diet I’ve found is Paleo. I cannot eat fruit which is part of the diet and after cutting out fruit my whole system changed in a few days. I don’t avoid the “acid foods” but I do know the foods to avoid since I have a very bad reaction to them. If your on PPI’s it takes several months to wean off them or you’ll have rebound and never find out what foods bother you. Wean off the PPI’s, most doctors don’t agree with this and think they are fine but they have many side effects. Only supposed to be taken for 14 days, I was on them for 19 years. Very hard to get off them. Even after LINX surgery I still had to take Zantac twice a day until I changed mt diet, now I don’t take anything! Try Paleo,

Hi!! Each of our bodies are so unique. What is okay for you might harm me. So taking that approach no one can really tell you what you can safely digest. We can only give you our stories and you filter out the information for your own health concerns. Gluten free foods are really worse junk food. Gluten zero is a medical diet for Celiac and some are helped that have other autoimmune diseases. I am currently on a medical diet called AIP (autoimmune protocol). You can read more by simply googling it. It gives you a list of allowable foods that help heal from inflammation and help to examine when and how to reintroduce foods after healing has happened. Talking to ones that don’t understand fully your individual health needs causes anxiety. Don’t make eating (uniquely) such a subject in life. Eat how you should and as little attention brought to it the better. Eat and then live. Change the subject when it is brought up, it is no one elses concern. Good luck!!!

Yes, autoimmune is diet controlled, so much of our diet tolerances is genes, What can upset one person won’t hurt someone else, that’s why it’s important to find what kind of foods are causing your health issues. By eliminating certain food groups for a month or so and see how your body reacts is a way to find out what is causing your inflammation. In my case it was fruit in other cases it could be dairy, gluten, carbs, ect. Also try avoid harmful preservatives, pesticides, food colors ect try to eat whole foods and organic as much as possible. My husband can eat all the sugar and crap and he has no problems and doesn’t gain weight, I just look at that food and get sick!!

I believe in diet for autoimmune and second the fact that everyone is different. The Paleo Auto immune protocol was the diet for me, but it never got rid of Gerd until I started taking supplements to heal my gut. I can drink coffee, alcohol (which I am not recommending), and eat acidic food and not get acid reflux since being on the diet, introducing foods that don’t bother me, and taking the supplements as recommended by Kris Kresser (here is the link: http://my.chriskresser.com/the-supplement-guide/). As said previously, I am just sharing what worked magically for me. No PPI’s, no Zantac, just healthy eating (with some cheating) and supplements.

Yes! I agree, I drink wine and coffee but found out what foods don’t agree with me but do cheat once and awhile, pay the price for a few days but gotta live!

I have silent reflux so never got heartburn. Apparently I just got pain in upper right quadrant of my stomach. The pain was from acid from stomach damaging my esophagus. After many tests found a large ulcer and Barrett’s esophagus. So now am on Prilosec till it’s healed. Seems I have to watch what I eat also. I love salads but for a while have to avoid raw foods. So unfair. What supplements helped you the most? I take vitamin d b complex magnesium probiotics turmeric and coq10 and fish oil. Am I missing something. Oh I also take a thyroid supplement that has zinc iodine and selenium. I am gluten and dairy free but it seemed to make no difference in my digestive issues. I have gas and bloating all the time. Constipation too. Any suggestions would be so welcome. Thankyou

Medicare will pay for the kit if a doctor orders the test.
