Slow transit constipation and surgery
Hi, I have slow transit constipation and Ive tried everything with little help. Amitiza, linzess, trulance...diet modification, pelvic floor therapy...etc. It affects the quality of my life every day. It started at 18 and im almost 34. I cannot maintain a job or even finish school. Just saw a new gastro and he wants me to "drag my feet" on surgery. I know it is not to be taken lightly but i want a life, while im rather young. Just really stressed and would like any thoughts or info that would help. Thanks.

Becky I have been looking for your posts. I’m not any better. I’ve run through everything but I sit back and say I don’t want the total colectomy. Since I have posted I have tried to see motility doctors of a different gastro. It’s so bad than you can be this sick and they can say I have nothing for six months. It just leaves me hopeless. If been thinking all my time at Brighams with the Gastro doc he never once had labs ordered. I would always ask my pcp. My pcp found the pancreatic cysts 6 months ago and he has booked a six month mri because I have no appointment till January of next year with a pancreatic specialist. What if it’s something serious, it just doesn’t matter because you can’t get an appointment. I want this problem looked at before January 19th surgery if im even doing the surgery. I changed Gastro docs and see the new one December 23 that took six months. We have chatted briefly through portal but yesterday she writes Joanne I think you need a motility specialist, really. What is wrong with doctors. Im so upset that for months im treating myself along with my pcp but he keeps saying you pushed out surgery but we can’t get you into anyone to dig deeper. I guess you need to be closer to dying for anyone to take notice. Im so tired of medical and their cavalier attitude about just sit and wait or go to the ED if you get really bad. Well I hope you read this. Im stressed beyond belief because I canceled and hoped to look deeper into this severe motility issue but I can get help. So sad…Joanne

They passed you along to me bc I posted about Sitz Marker test. I saw a surgeon Tuesday for a second opinion for a Colectomy. She wants me to do the study to determine appropriate surgery. I’m really worried as I barely have BM’s now on numerous meds and can’t imagine 11 days with nothing. However, my main concern is if you don’t poop at all, do any of those rings go anywhere? I don’t want to go through all this for nothing.
Hi, that was one of my first tests back in 2020 with severe slow motility and my results were terrible. I didn’t pass one ring but how can you when your full of stool. It’s not like the rings perform a miracle and hop right over. I did the Smart Pill study and showed severe motility beginning in stomach which was very unexpected. I backed out of a total colectomy twice. I’m still having so many issues but for me weighing it out I would only deal with new issues so my colon still intact. I follow a very strict regimen of food, prescription meds and Philips milk of mag every other night. Being consistent for me has been key. I do have many times when I hit 11 days and nothing. I’ve simply adjusted and will keep my colon if I can. So so many folks live this life. It’s a choice. All the best to you.

Stomach, small intestine and colon. But only colon really causes issues. I’ve tried every med and nothing works. I’ve had four years of misery and my life is controlled by my colon. Last fall, a new gi suggested surgery. I thought I’d be horrified at the very thought! Surprisingly, I wasn’t. So, this dr was a second opinion. So, when you said you didn’t pass any of the markers, did they get stuck right at the beginning or did some make their way part way through? That is my concern with doing this. If I don’t poop fit 6 days before the first X-ray, are they all going to just get stuck there? If so, there is no point in putting myself through all this for absolutely nothing.
Hello all.
I have had the redundant colon all my life ( hard to believe ) !!!! I am now 73.
I’ve lived on laxatives and fibre and it’s miserable because it constantly gets used to one product and then fecal compaction occurs.
It’s a big worry now and I want to have surgery . Has anyone else had successful partial removal ?

1 ReactionHello @sheilagreen and welcome to the Digestive Health support group on Mayo Connect. I'm sorry to hear about your lifelong problem with a redundant colon. Like you said, it is "hard to believe." We can all attest to the difficulty in relying on laxatives on a long-term basis.
