Sjogrens and poor sleep

Posted by dederickve @dederickve, Sep 24 5:19pm

Any suggestions for my extremely dry mouth. Manage ok during the day, but sleep is hard to come by, when I have to get a drink of water just every little bit. Miserable. Have been diagnosed with Sjogrens.

I have Sjorgens, and have the extremely dry mouth at night too. My dentist recommended OraCoat XyliMelts. They actually worked well once I could get them stuck to my gums. I also just started using Now toothpaste with xylitol in it, and that also helped for a couple of hours. My only other problem is that xylitol bothers my stomach, but I don't think that's a problem with most people.
Hope you can find some relief very soon.

@sal951 Thanks for writing. It’s a miserable situation. I used to use Oxyfresh toothpaste, and it was great . But, lost any way to get it, for years. Now, when I use it, I doesn’t help nearly as much. It may be me. . . I have gotten worse with time. A humidifier doesn’t seem to help, either. I will look for the products you mentioned. Thanks.

Hi @dederickve, I am glad you posted to connect with others about getting a better night sleep because of Sjogren’s related dry mouth.

I do not have the autoimmune but can relate to just wanting to sleep through the night. I had a long time when I would have to get up and exercise for about 20 minutes in the middle of the night, then I could go straight back to sleep. Not doing it was miserable, and figuring out that this actually worked just felt like opposite world.

@sal951 has good ideas to try, and as you wait for others to comment you may want to read through other discussions. I searched for dry mouth from the home page and did find this one that may help:
- Sjogren’s Dry Mouth discussion: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/dry-mouth-remedies/
You may have already tried medications, but in case you haven’t a couple are recommended here:
- Mayo Clinic Sjogren’s Overview: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sjogrens-syndrome/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20353221

Has your doctor had any recommendations to try for relieving your dry mouth while you are sleeping? Have you been able to find any foods that help or cause more problems?

I use Xylimelts dry mouth. One side has something on it that will stick to the roof of your mouth I have used that at night when I’ve been very dry at night and I feel safe because it don’t move.
I have a small bottle container next to my bed so if my mouth gets very dry, I use some water also and using a CPAP machine that is also making my mouth dry
Can’t win no matter what I do, but it helps
Good luck
