Posted by sharonsusan @sharonsusan, Dec 6, 2023

Knee surgery went well. Rehab good for 2+ months. Then, horrible SIJ pain, for a month. Now SIJ pain, not as bad, mostly in morning. Can not fully extend leg.
70, good health, active,
Suggestions?

I also had a TKA on 9/13/23 and am doing well - glad to hear the same for you. I had to look up SIJ pain. So perhaps see a chiropractor? I see one weekly - I have played the violin for over 60 years professionally and my back has its issues. I hope you get to be pain free - Merry Christmas!

@sharonsusan Welcome to Mayo Connect. It is really hard to know "what to do" after surgery when recovery is suddenly interrupted by a new and unwelcome symptom. I would suggest tow things at this point in recovery (not a knee patient, but complex hip replacements in my history)
First, if you have not already done so, have the surgeon confirm that all is well with the knee and its healing. It most probably is, but since it is the "new part" in your body, it's good to confirm.
Second, ask for a referral back to PT - not for the knee, but to address the SI joint specifically.
When we get new joints, so much changes in our body - and we need to remember that everything is interconnected, and responds in its own way. So as out gait changes after surgery, and we start working on the leg muscles, we stress other joints and muscles, and eventually they respond - not always in a happy way!
Has the PT tried to help with your issue yet?
Sue
PS Try my "Dr Mom" advice - 2 one pound bags of frozen peas or corn - the cheaper the better. Keep them in the freezer, and relax on them for 20 minutes several times a day. Then, do a few gentle stretches & extensions. Besides the cold, as you move around they do a little "micro acupressure" on the joint.

Hello, I am sorry to hear you are going through the SI pain. Some of my physical therapy caused my SI joint to act up on me about a month ago. My physical therapist had me move certain ways and it released it. I am glad to hear that it is easing up for you. You should really try riding a stationary bike. If you can’t peddle totally around push the peddle forward as far as you can and the push it backwards as far as you can. Do it slowly back and forth. Eventually you will be able to peddle a full rotation. My knee did it on its own after the second day . Once you do this your flexion will be at 110 . Continue to ride the bike to keep the stiffness away. Best of luck to you!
