Side sleeper: My neuropathy is worse at night and on one side more

Posted by myfeetareonfire @myfeetareonfire, May 4, 2022

Hi folks, I'm a side sleeper and my worst neuropathy is when I go to bed. It hurts worse on one side than the other. It takes almost an hour for the sensation to go away. I am on Gabapentin. My doctor is stumped on why it hurts more on one side than the other. Thanks for your assistance. Stay safe.

Welcome @myfeetareonfire, I'm sure there are a lot of side sleepers on Connect. I'm also one of them and I have problems once in awhile with my shoulders and arms "falling asleep" then I suddenly wake up with the numbness and tingling in my hands, arms and shoulder. Here's an interesting article on the subject.

What has helped me is using a small pillow on top of my regular pillow for my head and then I make sure my arm is resting on top of the larger pillow which changes the position of my arm. I also use a small pillow between my legs to keep my knees apart. @lioness, @oldkarl, @artscaping, @babette, @amytro and others may also have suggestions to share with you.

Is the pain sensation tingling and numbness or more like burning?

@johnbishop You have a good attitude. That is, that the most effective medicine on the whole is that which you build up for yourself. Diet, position, positivity, etc. As part of my diet I take about a one-fourth to one-half teaspoon of turmeric in a full glass of water with my morning meds, every day. When I forget, I end up with the neuropathy before noon. Then I take the turmeric, and the neuropathy goes away in about an hour. The reason I started this was that Sequencing.com work listed as one of my variants one that suggested I might have a need for additional turmeric. So I started. I use plain kitchen turmeric. It's cheap. And I have taken off some weight, although not intentionally taken off so much (sixty pounds since Thanksgiving). But I started the turmeric about a year before that. I am anxious now to learn what the Whole Genome Sequencing will reveal. oldkarl

I have the same problem. Doctors think I have sciatica on one side but its NOT coming from my back per MRI. So I need to find exactly what is causing that other pain.

Tingling and it is only in my feet. No problem with arms or hands. When I first was diagnosed 21 months ago, it was only in the toes, but in recent months, it has spread to the whole foot. I was using lidocaine with the gabapentin when it was on the toes but when it spread to the whole foot, I stopped using the lidocaine. Otherwise I would be using a whole tube every night before bed.

I take about 750 mg Turmeric in the morning. The serving size of the brand I take is 3 capsules (2250 mg) but I only take one to help with inflammation -- https://www.amazon.com/NatureWise-Curcuminoids-BioPerine-Absorption-Cardiovascular/dp/B01BMDAVIY.

Great article on sleep position @johnbishop . I’ve been struggling with the arm numbness for about. 6 months. I have been terrified being woken thinking I’ve had a stroke and the minute it takes to shake and massage my arms, hand, or fingers to get feeling and movement back. While I’ve been experimenting with how to avoid having this happen, this article offers upfront assistance to help tackle the issue. For me, well timed information!

Hi!
I am a side sleeper. I just read your response about the "helpful article." I have had serious foot P-N problems for years, but just started this year with my hands and arms going numb during the night. I could have written exactly what you said!! I was afraid I was having a stroke.
Please share what "ARTICLE" you said was helpful? Also, my hands are very cold all the time if the outside temperature is below 70 degrees. Any ideas out there would be most welcomed!!!

Oh my, sounds so much like me! Gabapentin is my helper for all, esp heat and cold swings. I have to watch shower and all water temps. The article is in @johnbishop thread - can you see it in that post? If not, when I get home to my computer, I’ll see if I can copy and paste it for you, Anything to help us with this thing!
