Side effects of cortisone injection?
I had a cortisone injection in my left knee on Tuesday. By the evening I got a headache, felt like a migraine. Two days later the headache subsided but my right neck\jaw area has shooting pains coming at regular intervals. Has anyone experienced something similar? Not sure what to do about it????

@gardeningjunkie How much did the PRP injections cost you if you don’t mind me asking?
$1.700 for both knees. If only one was done it was $1,200.
I had to try, but no noticeable difference in either knee.

2 ReactionsI also had a strange reaction to cortisone injections, first in my knee then again later in my shoulder. About 10 minutes after the injection, I got a head rush then a sense of fading consciousness - like I was about to pass out. It didn’t last more than about 5 minutes but had happened twice. Now I am resisting any more cortisone and consequently dealing with increasing pain. I cannot find any info on similar side effects.

1 ReactionI am 81. I've had many cortisone shots in my arthitic knees but not in my shoulders (also arthritic and painful) until a few months ago. I had a shot in each shoulder at the same time. As I was walking out to my car I felt very dizzy and lightheaded. When I sat down in my car and reached with my left hand for the steering wheel, my hand would not obey me. It was moving a little as I tried to raise it but it would not go up and grab the steering wheel. I was worried and went back inside and told them what happened. They had me sit down for ahwile and gave me water and crackers. The NP told me maybe I got too much cortisone all at once and next time she would only do one shoulder at a time. The shots did work and I had wonderful pain relief for about 3 months. But I am afraid to get them again. I was afraid that I might have had a TIA.
That's a lot of cortisone at once. They should have been wiser given your age. My doctor said if they put it directly in the joint it shouldn't effect the rest of your body but it always does for me. I've found keeping the muscles around the joint strong with weights helps best.

1 ReactionThanks Koleke for that comment about weight work for shoulder arthritis. I found the same result...if I keep the physical therapy going I can keep the shoulder from ruining my days and nights. I had the same experience with my arthritic knee, but that was before the knee replacement. Weight work after joint replacement made for a year of tissue damage and suffering. Are there others in this group who had that happen?Hopefully someone will jump in with a comment.
I have always had terrible side effects from Cortizone injections, except one time. Because of that I had the doctor reduce the amount of medication to 50% of the dose this started years ago and I am 68 now. It’s the same I get flushed in the face, lightheaded, a moon face, and a moon belly for a couple weeks and insomnia for four or five nights. When my doctor is really careful and inject it into a joint without it leaking to the surrounding area area. I have a much better result. You need to talk to your pain management doctor regulate The dose dry different kinds of steroid injections and different locations. It’s not good for you but suffering with unbearable Nerf pain is worse. I have it done in my spine and facet joints. I used to have it in my hip joints until it stopped working. When it stops working, it means you need a joint replacement was my experience.
Yes, strengthening your core, your glutes, surrounding muscle and supporting your joints with exercise, proper exercise that doesn’t worsen the pain is the way to go. Cortizone isn’t very good for you. Don’t let your doctor give you a full dose if you have side effects and be sure to discuss it with them and let them know your consequences!

2 ReactionsTo cwsch42:
I’ve also had a strange reaction to a Cortisone shot. Felt lightheaded like I was about to faint. Got headache, nausea.
Did the negative symptoms you describe come about immediately after the injection or at a later time after returning home? I experienced similar symptoms after my first thoracic spine injection but I hadn’t eaten before the procedure. And sitting up after the procedure caused lightheadedness due to my BP dropping. I just sat there until I was okay to get off the table. This is not an uncommon occurrence after such a procedure.
