Shrinking penis after surgery and radiation

Posted by jeanadair123 @jeanadair123, Oct 13, 2020

My husband had his prostrate removed by surgery in 2003, in 2011 his PSA was high so he had 38 treatments of radiation. Slowly his penis has shrunk to the point that he said it is getting difficult to pee standing up. Is this a side effect of the surgery/radiation and is there anything that can help? Thank you.

How can those abnormal groin muscle contractions be resolved?

If I had that question, I would ask my physical therapist, who specializes in pelvic floor issues.

@rcp

Is he also on ADT? That will cause a lot of penile and testicular shrinkage.

Hi @rcp, did you have ADT for prostate cancer? I look forward to learning more about your journey.

Hey Jake, you're right that after prostate removal penile shortening often reverses on its own within 6 to 12 months.

@songwriterdanny, kudos on using exercising during your recovery and for your health. Experts aren’t sure why the penis shortens after prostatectomy. One possible cause is abnormal muscle contractions in a man’s groin that pull the penis farther into their body. Perhaps exercising has helped release groin muscle contraction. I couldn't say. But what I do know is that exercise is good for you. What type of activity to like the best?

I had the radical prostatectomy 4 years ago.
Fortunately some nerve endings were saved.
The surgeon suggested masturbation to maintain some level of sexual normality.
With the use of sexual images on the web I managed to get a weak erection which was enough to reach orgasm.
What i noticed was that it was best when the bladder was not empty.
The orgasm contractions caused a strong ejaculation but with urine.
This was an improvement over ejaculation without urine.
For those who can still have relations with a partner a condom is recommended....

About a week ago I woke up and went on the old PC.
Looked at my screen, found my favorite pornography, and, still half asleep, I began listening to Clarence Carter for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfnDq4R6hOQ
and after about 20 minutes, something happened. I think it was like what you described: a very weird ejaculation that seemed to be made of both semen and piss. Honestly, I don't know if it qualifies as an orgasm, and I have been unable to replicate it - so far. But I intend to keep trying!

I have the same problem. I am hoping in 6 months to get a penile implant to rectify the problem and some others.

Let me know how the implant works. Did you try P-shot?

I had shrinkage after surgery, more after radiation, and the biggest occurred after Lupron injections. I was circumsized
as a baby. My penis has shrunk back int skin and looks like I was not. This causes problems when I get a strong urge to urinate and I have trouble getting a hold of anything. Thus, pee goes everywhere.

He might try using a penis pump for 15 minutes each day to get back enough length to aid in being able to urinate standing up. I bought a cheap pump off ebay and do this 15 minute stretch prior to bed each night. Good results.

Interestingly, I "discovered" that masturbation and orgasm is not tied to erection.

It took a good 12 months after my surgery before I began to have any hint of erection but under the use it or lose it part of penile recovery therapy I "masturbated" 2-3 times a week. Though flaccid, I did orgasm. That's when I learned an erection was not necessary for an orgasm. Even when I was on 18 months of Lupron and my genitalia shrunk to it's pretty-pubescent phase I could masturbate and achieve orgasm though certainly no erection. I

I am one of the fortunate ones, by 18 months after nerve sparing surgery I was able to achieve an erection albeit not what it was before.

I was one of the 20% or so who do not lose their libido while on Lupron,

Today, over eight years from my surgery I can achieve a pretty good erection with Cialis and stimulation. There is no intercourse with my wife though, she quit awhile back

It may be early given your surgery to begin having erections orgasms but both are possible though you may find only one, orgasm.

Do much depends on your pre-surgery function, whether your surgery was nerve sparing, the skill of your surgeon and your rehabilitation therapy.

I am probably outside the norm in terms of my recovery of function, sadly, I am probably well within the normal when it comes to my wife of 32 years and no sex, and I mean none!
