Shoulder replacement and nerve block cath option

Posted by caymanjo @caymanjo, 6 days ago

Shoulder replacement scheduled for next week, most likely reverse. The option for a nerve block cath x3 days after surgery is available. I do not have significant pain presently with my shoulder and have a decent pain tolerance. Ice machine ready, I have upped my yoga and exercise to daily since 1/1. Leaning towards not electing for cath and get feedback both + and - about the benefits and need.
Would appreciate any feedback from others that have had this surgery.
Thanks, JoAnne

I had nerve block during surgery only

Thanks. How was your recovery?

I had both shoulders replaced 10 years ago (reverse) with success.
It is a relieve, special for the first 2 days to get over the most painful days.

I also had a nerve block during reverse total left shoulder replacement surgery on 10/29/25. That part was very successful. Because I also have uncontrolled bone destruction, my pain levels are quite high.

My neighbor had a regular shoulder replacement with the nerve block during surgery and did wonderfully well.

Best wishes to you.

Thanks. Yes I will have a nerve block during the surgery. Option to be discharged with one for 3 days. Did you have that option and if so use it ?

I did not have a post-surgical nerve block, and would not have needed one as my pain levels were minimal. I did not take the prescribed Oxycodone or Tramodol I was sent home with, they made me nauseous and unable to function, not to mention constipated. (which I learned after my first knee replacement. ) Prescription strength ibuprofen and acetomenophin on a schedule were all I felt I needed for the general ache in my rTSR shoulder. I had the same surgeon for both knees and my shoulder. I don't know what pain protocols or techniques he uses, but all of my surgeries went well, with good results, and very little post-surgical pain other than an overall dull ache in the area, although I am a wuss that normally feels every little pain.

Great. Thanks. That’s very encouraging. I am leaning that way also
