Hi @modonnellreynol, welcome to Connect.
Allow me to bring in @miyonggilman and @gwinter, who have had an oophorectomy, as well as @chowmama2 and @leannn who have experience with early stage ovarian cancer.
Technically speaking, if you've been diagnosed with low grade, stage 1 ovarian cancer, having surgery to remove your ovaries (oophorectomy) is not prophylactic (preventative), but rather the treatment. Typically stage 1 is first treated with surgery. Low grade may not need further treatment after surgery. Here's further information from the American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/cancer/ovarian-cancer/treating/by-stage.html
@modonnellreynol, is there a reason you are worried about having surgery, like fertility and the possibility of having children?
@modonnellreynol I do not know your circumstances or age....so
I offer only my experience. I was Stage 1A breast cancer hormones positive, Hers negative, BUT because of so much breast cancer in our past generations my tumor was sent to be oncotyped and found to be RAD51C positive, which leads to possible ovarian cancer. I am 65 and had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy/ oophorectomy. I guess in a way you can call it prophylactic because I was having no problems there!
I had 2 csections so I thought I was ready for the after effects, HA! Not fun! Long healing time!
Good luck to you....ask any questions!
Sorry, I have breast cancer. My grandmother had breast cancer but died from ovarian cancer about 12 years later. She was 63 same age as me when she had breast cancer. The lab tests did not indicate a genetic cause.
That’s my situation as well. I’m 63 the same age as my grandmother when she had breast cancer. She died of ovarian cancer at 75.
No oncotype of your tumor?
