Sharp electric pain in right top side teeth and gum?

Posted by sarah314 @sarah314, 3 days ago

I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and just had a mri with and without contrast, it didn't show a compression I'm at a loss and the pain is unbearable! Last night from 3pm to 11pm I had almost constant shocks. Anyone have helpful tip? Did oxcarbazepine take away your shocks? Any information helps at this point

No and thank you I didn't receive any test about viruses. I seen a neurologist at University of Michigan she just done the mri of the right trigeminal nerve. I should have gave a in depth of what went on. In November I had about 4 or 5 episodes that would last up to 4 hours of these electrical shocks I changed eating habits put in supplements started wearing a mouthguard and they stopped from December 2nd till January 14th. December 1st i went to u of m e.r. and they diagnosed me along with a dentist i found weeks before. The U of M prescribed me 2 weeks of carbamazepine, i didn't take them because i didn't want to start and not have more. January 14th I finally got a primary doctor she told me to start it because I was to see my neurologist January 20th. Shocks came back January 15th and I ended up stopping the medication on Jan 27th noticed a rash starting. Then had no shocks till February 24th and that's when they were from 3pm till 11pm and I started taking oxcarbazepine at 5pm that night since then no shocks once again. I had the mri February 20th of the right trigeminal nerve and the shocks come in 2 teeth on my upper right side. Nothing was seen so I don't know and I was in pretty good health besides what felt like a gum infection right before this.

Sarah, my TN attacks stayed one month after dentist crowned 2 upper rt molars.
Sometimes the needle can damage the TN.
Good luck.

@sarah314 I did not get an electric shock type pain in my jaw. I do know what that feels like because I did experience those types of pain before my spine surgery. A shock represents nerve compression that is more severe.

So with it being more severe it probably won't heal on it's own? The thing that doesn't make sense is my mri came back clear no compression. I did ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon so maybe he could look at it. I'm at a loss.

Sarah. My trigeminal neuralgia started 2 years ago, about a month after having 2 upper rt cracked molars crowned. I am 81 and had been playing sax every day for a few hours. Severe pain in my rt jaw for seconds would stop abruptly upon getting out of bed each morning only if I had been sleeping on rt side. Sometimes during the day. 3 dentists found all upper teeth ok. Then I was getting severe gum pain above those teeth, mainly the rt canine. Dr.diagnosef TN and put me on cabamazepine. All pain stopped. Great. But I did not like ATACIA, that drunken feeling walking. Also after 3 months, liver is damaged badly. A friend gave me a packet of cayenne pepper. I down 1/2 teaspoon in water first thing. Sprinkle it in drinks and on all food all day long .. Pain gone. Am waiting to see a neurologist. Hopefully he will order sn MRI. Right now the incisor is bite sensitive.
. Good luck

I didn't like carbamazepine either. I have started oxcarbazepine and I feel hardly any side effects from it. The shocks have stopped 150mg twice a day but I just started. I'm so sorry you have to go thru this! I didn't have dental work it just came out of bad hygiene for my teeth. I know I was clenching and grinding at night. Now I brush and rinse after anything I eat. I'm hoping I can turn back time lol.

Carbamazepine (Tegretol) at first ot made the shocks bearable and shorter after some time they completely stopped. Trigeminal Neuralgia was absolutely the worst pain ever!

Cabamazepine stoped my TN attacks. A few weeks later I switched to cayenne pepper. Works just as well. No side effects.
