Sharp and severe pain in upper back of left hip when walking

Posted by timshug @timshug, 1 day ago

I have periodically experienced a sharp pain in my left upper hip when swinging or lifting my left leg such as in walking and getting in and out of a car. It is now continuous and very severe to the point of hardly being able to walk, even with a cane. It feels like a pinched nerve. I'm 87 years old but fairly active playing both golf and softball. I had both knees replace 20 & 25 years ago. Anyone experience this and able to correct it?

I have something very similar on my right side and was diagnosed a year ago with scoliosis. X-rays and MRI will confirm any issues you have or don’t have with your back. 🙏😊

I have this, too. I had surgery on my lumbar spine due to stenosis, degenerative disc disease and neurogenic claudication. I still have some hip flexor pain and difficulty walking and lifting leg, especially on the right. You may want to get MRIs of your lumbar spine and hips by an orthopedic spine and hip specialist.

Good luck getting help with this pain that is impacting your daily functioning.

P.S. They may offer injections where the source of pain is to see if they help with inflammation before doing anything more intensive. You may benefit from using Salonpas lidocaine nerve pain patches. Placed them on your lower back and pull them to the side that is hurting the most. This has helped me relieve nerve pain temporarily.

@dlydailyhope I agree with you on the lidocaine patches for temporary relief. Salonpas were the best over the counter option I could find and then my doctor gave me a prescription for the 5% lidocaine patches. Wow, they work so much better!!

Thanks, @sherrym25! I didn’t know you could get a prescription for a stronger lidocaine patch!

@dlydailyhope you are welcome! I was not aware of it but asked my doctor anyhow and sure enough she ordered it up for me. It’s 5% lidocaine, which doesn’t seem like a big difference because Salonpa says they are 4% but it’s a night and day difference for me. 12 hours on and then 12 hours without a patch. They also stick on much better than over the counter ones. I hope you are able to try them out!
