Severe vomiting problem

Posted by jean64 @jean64, Sep 24, 2023

I have been dealing with severe vomiting and stomach pain every few weeks (that will last from 1-3 days) for the last three years. Had gallbladder removed two years ago but vomiting episodes continued. Was then told I had cyclic vomiting syndrome. Have had 2 endoscopes (first one showed mild gastrisits and second one was normal). Just recently had a CT scan in ER and was told it is colitis. Have an appt with my GI next week. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this?

November time I had a sudden attack of what I thought was a stomach bug, really violent diarrhoea and vomiting with a fever. I got a rash, my hands and faced swelled and went red (cortisol reaction from stress?). I rang 111 after those symptoms and they eventually decided it was IBS (lol).December- 2nd bout. Severe diarrhoea and vomiting again, fever. This time was worse, I threw up over 40 times within 8hrs. Rang 111 again as couldn't keep fluid down, dizzy etc. Admitted to hospital, bloods and urine were fine.This weekend just gone...3rd bout! Again severe diarrhoea and vomiting with fever. Wasn't as frequent this time but lasted 2.5 days.Inbetween these episodes I feel fine. Once all my food has been thrown up I violently and painfully throw up and thick dark green sludge. Intestines burning, no cramping.Stool sample sent off but waiting to hear back. Dr's sound baffled and say it can't be a different stomach bug 3 times so close.I am so traumatised and scared, when will it happen again. On Googling it could be so many things..

@lou96 Severe gastroparesis?? Parasite? Cyclical vomiting syndrome? Have you been out of the country anywhere before then? Ughhhhhhh .... friend, this is so awful! My heart truly goes out to you. I'm going to be thinking about this. Hopefully someone here can provide insight soon! Do you have a good set of Dr's near you to jump in and help?

This sounds dreadful, so sorry you had this so much ! Time to get to a gastro doc, get a complete work up- endoscopy and/or colonoscopy, imaging. Get on it so you can put a stop to it sooner rather than later ! Good luck !

I’m sorry to hear how bad you are feeling, it sounds awful and certainly scary, good thing you’re getting help with this to find out what’s going on. I’m thinking that it sounds viral especially with fever and green sludge sounds like a possible infection, did you travel recently or eat something different from your usual diet? Definitely keep going to the doctor until they figure it out for you, be wishes.

@lou96 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your post here to where others were discussing vomiting and related issues:

- Severe vomiting problem https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/severe-vomiting-every-few-weeks-for-last-two-years/

Hoping that here you can connect with members such as @annewoodmayo @momluvsthree @astaingegerdm and others who may have some input on your situation with so much vomiting, swelling, rash, fever and diarrhea.

Yes, searching online can potentially send you down rabbit holes, and I've found it usually scares me, if looking for something medical related to myself.

How are you feeling today?

@lou96
It must be very scary to have these episodes and not knowing why.
I agree with advice already given to see a gastroenterologist, preferably one associated with a major hospital or university hospital.
They will most likely perform endoscopy and colonoscopy where biopsies can be taken.
Fever doesn’t necessarily mean that you have an infection, it can also be part of a severe allergic reaction.
You can start a food diary before your appointment- writing down everything you are eating and drinking.

@lou96

could it be a blockage in your intestines?......at least ask for xray and /or ct scan
