Anyone deal with severe pain after Y90 treatment?

Posted by baker23 @baker23, Jun 24, 2025

5 days ago I had y90 embolization to the liver for metastatic nonfunctional NET. Severe pain and vomiting after procedure. Had to be admitted for 3 days. At home now. Still in pain and constipated. Stopped opioid use yesterday. Pain was so bad I was screaming coming out of the procedure. Anyone else experience this?

Hi all, I’m glad I found this thread.. my husband was recently diagnosed with a 15cm NET in his liver. Just underwent Y90 two weeks and a day ago… I know the fatigue is going to be persistent for a bit longer but he’s also had constant pain in the area of the liver, varies fr/ dull to sometimes intense. Otherwise his appetite has been fine and today has a low grade temp when he got home fr/ work. Otherwise no gastro issues like nausea/constipation/diarrhea etc… I’ve read in this thread that there are a few ppl that have ulcer like symptoms, he doesn’t seem to have that, just discomfort in the area of the liver which the IR Dr did warn us would be possible since the liver being regenerative reacts to the Y90 on the tumor… anyone had a similar experience? Thanks in advance.

Hello @calinina and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. How long ago was your husband diagnosed with NETs in the liver?
You asked to learn about the experience of others who had Y 90 treatment. Here is a link where you can read the posts of others who have had this treatment:

I look forward to hearing from you again regarding your husband's progress with his treatment. Were other treatments tried before the Y 90?

It’s a recent development, it was discovered end of April. His surgeon wants to shrink it with Y90 before attempting to remove it to ensure clear margins. Thank you for the links.

@demata10 Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. Sorry to hear about the nausea. What is getting prescribed to help? What diagnosis led to the Y90 treatment?

@tomrennie
Thanks for your response. Yes, they prescribed Zofran which is a great help but can cause constipation so being cautious with use. Diagnosed with neuro endocrine tumor 12/25, grade 3, stage 4. As usual no symptoms and was found during routine MRI for lower back discomfort, lesions on lumber vertebrae. 12 tumors on liver led to Y90 treatments, next one is 7/1.
Tumors on outer lungs, liver and lesions throughout skeletal system. Dr. says atypical, none found in GI system yet and cells are well differentiated.
