Severe Insomnia with Fibromyalgia - How to Cope

Posted by ripley @ripley, Feb 25 10:57am

Does anyone suffer from insomnia with their fibromyalgia and, if so, what helps you? I usually fall asleep easily after taking 75-100mg Trazodone, 2.5mg Melatonin, and sometimes one hemp gummy. But I wake after about 4 hrs and can not fall back asleep. I feel like my nerves have become awakened, which wakens my mind, preventing sleep. I've tried taking another Trazodone or gummy in the middle of the night, but neither helps me fall back asleep. I have pain and all the other fibro symptoms too but feel I could better cope with those if I could get a decent night's sleep. I don't take any of the meds meant for fibro. For supplements, I take magnesium glycinate, fish oil, B1, D2 and calcium. My dr suggested CoQ10 but that seemed to make my insomnia worse. She also suggested high potency B vitamin complex, but I think that might also negatively affect my sleep. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I totally understand because I experience the same thing. I can fall asleep easily then wake up with pain and that is the end of it. I have found that specific exercises I was given through physical therapy have helped me. When I wake up in the middle of the night I do these stretching exercises and movements and they actually do help me with pain accompanied by sleepiness and I can many times return to bed and sleep the rest of the night. I would suggest going to the web and entering exercises for fibromyalgia pain or something like that and see what you can find. These exercises and stretches help me more than any pain med. I hope you can get help to feel better.

So how does your day go. I fall asleep with no problem then the pain gets to a point that I toss and turn trying to get comfortable. Once I get up I just feel exhausted all day.

Hi. I still feel tired because it doesn't always work for me, that is every night. But at the times that the stretches in the middle of the night do enable me to return to sleep, of course I do have a better day; ;however, the pain follows me into the day, especially when the weather is changing. I also found that chiropractic help is valuable for me. I also find that if I work out the stretches and exercises at least once during the day, it continues to help with the pain. We all know there are no easy answers. This is just a simple thing that helps me. And all this stuff takes time. It is easy to get discouraged and tell myself I don't want to do this stuff anymore, and I think that is part of the disorder. We must try to stay focused on self-care. And I know from experience that the phrase "staying positive" does tend to get irritating when one is dealing with these things every night and every day. I hoe this will help you some.

I've had FM for 40 years. I take a clonazepam to go to sleep and like you wake up 3 or 4 hours later. I then take a half clonazepam which is my limit. I do go back to sleep usually but then it's waking up every hour and a trip to the bathroom. I also rub on A535 at night and also when I get up. I am 75 and am so tired of struggling with this pain. I don't know what is meant by flare because I've always got pain which just moves around. Yesterday mostly in my gluts, shoulders and neck, this morning in my shins (bad). The weather is so triggering. I hope you find an answer.
