Severe Burning Pain after Knee Replacement

Posted by jeffyoung @jeffyoung, Nov 22, 2019

Had Total Knee Replacement 4/1/18 at VA. No PT ordered. Was on my own doing rehab exercises. Pain has not subsided. Using a crutch. Taking pain meds. Exhaustion sleep. Severe constant burning in left front knee. What is wrong?

@jeffyoung

I have been researching CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) and nerve ablation to remedy. I believe I may have this. Any suggestions.

So sorry I do know how you feel. After a femural head shatter I had titanium rod put in. I got diagnosed with CRPS because they couldn't find anything. Else . I was in a lot of pain. After two years of complete survival mode I found an osteomyelitis doc who was awesome. He took out my hardware and said I had a staph infection inside my bone. I won't lie , I thought it was my cure and it did help immensely but I still have after 15 yrs burn down the leg. It so exhausting. I just had a TKR Dec 2021 and am doing well but longer recovery due to femur break. What is my point? Sometimes they just don't know. And although I have a love/hate relationship with opioids I would not have been able to
Work wo them. The hardest part is finding a doctor to listen! I still haven't but I do have a PT Zeno does and a Physiatrist who does.
It's so hard to suffer and I still don't know if
I really have CRPS !

Is anyone else experiencing this? No luck with my original surgeon. I have sought a second and third opinion and have had 2 nerve blocks and a targeted injection, also no luck. It seems to be centered in my patella band.

Hi @cliff1950 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will see that I moved your post to a discussion burning pain after a knee replacement. I wanted you to be able to connect with others who have been through this tough time you are having.

Did the nerve block not work at all or it began hurting again after it wore off?

Did you have physical therapy after your knee replacement? Do you still have swelling or redness in the knee area?

I'm going to have knee replacement in 2 months. I don't know much about it but I don't think you should have such pain after 7 months. If your doctor won't help or explain what may be causing it I would go to someone else. Make sure they're board certified. Don't give up; it's the doctor's responsibility to treat your pain and find out what is causing it. Good luck.

I am 12 weeks post op and have burning in the knee, I was told the burning is nerves. I just had to have a MUA due to scar tissue. Do you have a lot of scar tissue? This can cause some bad pain. This is my second major surgery on the right knee in 2 years and still using one crutch , not really sleeping at night. It takes a long time sometimes. Keep working it , getting it stronger. Go see another doc if you’re unsatisfied with the one you have now. Good luck to you.

The doctor managed to get 0-145 with me asleep. Of course now it is at 100. It did help my stiff knee, it is the 3rd day after and still recovering. How long has it been since her surgery?

ammaw52. June 2nd 2022 was 4 months since my surgery. When I felt pt was going backwards I went and see pa. Also had a cyst behind knee. He really ignored me about knee stiffing so now it's worse. I am on a CPM 6,-8 hours a day. Wants to do manipulation 17 June. I see Dr Monday. My nerves are shot. I do pool exercise since 3 months out. Exercise at home and walk best I can outside. I do not want Dr to do mua. I do have a trust issue now. I ask for this cpm earlier and he said it would do no good now he's ordered this at home. Confused.
