Sertraline, 25 mg has has terrible side effects going on week 8. why?

Posted by caseycare @caseycare, Apr 9 12:56pm

I have anxiety and mild depression. My dr. Prescribed Sertraline 25 mg. I have had the worst side effects on now on my 8th week and the side effects have not subsided. My Dr. put me on Ativan to help with the getting adjusted. Being that I’m on week 8 I think this medication Sertraline is not going to work. I need to ween off the 25 mg of Sertraline asap. I need help and can I stay on the Ativan to help with the weaning off the Sertraline? Please help me learn the weaning process and time needed?

I know it's the doctor who should help you with this but I also understand we have to take some responsibilities for our own health within reason. I wanted to respond to your question because I went through the same thing, not only with Sertraline but several other antidepressants, also I'm a long time user of Ativan too. I had to come to the conclusion that these antidepressants do not agree with my system and often gave me worse feelings that what I already had to cope with. I still use Ativan for anxiety and it definitely helped me stop the antidepressant, the withdrawal is easier to deal with and I hope it can do the same for you, also perhaps you need to ask your doctor what dosage is best for you to go with or they might have another method for you to try, good luck with this and know that you're not alone.

I just wanted to add that my weaning process was very simple, I started taking Sertraline every other day for two weeks, followed by every two days for two weeks and then I was ready to stop.. didn't increase my Ativan because I didn't feel more anxiety while weaning, it's the one good thing I can say about antidepressants, they're not too difficult to wean off from but unfortunately I can't say the same for Ativan which is very addictive.

How many mg were you weaning off? Were you also taking Ativan ?

I’m taking Ativan daily, in the morning I take 0.5 mg. and the same dose at night, I believe that the dose I was taking with Setraline was 25 mg. I really want to take antidepressant because it’s not as addictive as Ativan, I have seen good results with family members on antidepressants but it’s not always the best for everyone.

If you still have such bad side effects after 8 weeks this medication is not for you. I also take Ativan it helps me with my anxiety. I would talk to your doctor and ask why you are still on this Rx. Good luck and 🤗

25 milligrams is a very low dose. I don’t think you’ll have much trouble weaning off of it. I recently weaned myself off of Cymbalta and that was a capsule. I just took 3/4 the dose for a week, then 1/2 for a week, until I was down to a few granules.
I did develop brain zaps, which I expected. But they were not severe, and lasted about a month.
