Septoplasty question

Posted by Brie @brie87144, Sep 26, 2017

Hey everyone. I just had a Septoplasty. Bilateral inferior turbinate submucosal reduction and outfracture. Nasal valve surgery and bone spur removal 13 days ago and everything has been going great. Except I accidentally sneezed really hard tonight before I could catch it and now there’s a tear on the inside of my nasal wall. It’s not very big at all and it’s so late I know my dr isn’t available right now. But this shouldn’t be much to worry about right? It burns a little cause it’s open but nothing unmanageable. Anyone had a tear before after septoplasty? Did they have to restitch it? I’m only asking cause I live 6&½ hours from my surgeon. I’d hate to go back but would if I needed too. Couldn’t find much on how common it is

Thanks in advance. Briana

Hello @brie87144

Great question! Thank you for posting. Were you able to connect with your physician? What did he/she say? This (http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/septoplasty/details/mayo-clinic-approach/orc-20205448) was the information Mayo.org had to offer on the topic.

I would assume sneezing is a common (and painful) thing that happens post op to septoplasty patients. ouch! How did the procedure go for you? Do you still have packing placed? My husband has this procedure done and I still remember him saying that having the packing removed being the best feeling and how he was "able to breathe again"!

I hope you are ok! My son had a septoplasty in Albuquerque several years ago and feels worse. Does anyone know of a physician that is and expert in the field?

Welcome to Connect, Elaine. If you would like to seek an appointment with a Mayo Clinic expert in ENT, here is the contact information for our three campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
Did your son recently start to feel worse?

Thank you for responding. Actually it never seemed to work. He was ok for awhile but now the deviation went to the opposite side. We requested an apt with Dr. Lai (I believe). Do you know if people are successful getting in?

Hello @elainelucero! Try the suggested appointment line above that Colleen offered.
At the Mayo ENT department in Rochester you could seek an appointment with Dr. Grant Hamilton, who is an expert in his field. Here is some information I was able to locate on Mayo Clinic.org https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/rhinoplasty/details/hamilton-grant-s-iii-m-d/gnc-20180893

My son has had a good experience after successful surgery by Dr Lal. He had had two failed surgeries by another physician before finding Dr Lal. She performed a septoplasty and extensive sinus surgery. She was thorough with her explanations to my son and family, quite competent, and he has had good follow up with her. Your son will be in good hands.
