Senior diabetic

Posted by purpleturtle @purpleturtle, Nov 20, 2022

Both of my sons have had Type 1 diabetes since they were young. We had no family history on either side of our families. I just had routine blood tests and my glucose is 146 which is up from 4 months ago when it was 103. Needless to say I am very concerned that I have developed diabetes. I have not spoken with my doctor yet . Has anyone developed Type 1 in their senior years. I am my 70s. My GFR isn't very good either.

Good Day,
All my comments is my experiences & my point of view only.
I am prediabetes over 10 years & age over 75.
#1 When you did the test? Wakeup morning or how many hours after food taken?
#2 Any sweet drink before the blood test?
#3 Do you know A1C% Test?
#4 As I know GFR is only the guideline.
#5 I live in Canada: Blood Test is using mmol/L ; in US is using mg/dl - as said 146. Is it 146 mg/dl?
#6 From my experience, if 146 mg/dl which is not too bad. Could be pre-diabetes only. ( Could be back to normal easily)
I am prediabetes over 10 years, but I am using - control diet food intake to lower my Blood glucose - even my Specialist did not necessary to see me any more and back to my family doctor . ( back to normal person 🙂 )

I am a type 2 for many years and now must take insulin for control. I am also at Stage 3 to Stage 4 kidney disease where diet and exercise play an important part. GFR could be a concern as well as the two are quite related. When you say 146, the important part of this is also having an A1C test which is the average of your blood sugars over about the last 90 days. I would get tested again in a few months, with an A1C and eGFR to determine your actual trend. Blood sugars fluctuate and you could have had fruit in the morning prior to your recent lab test. Both lab tests of A1C and eGFR are quite useful in determining a trend for blood sugar problems and kidney disease, respectively.

Thank you. I got my A1C results today and it was 5.9. My doctor said as long as it doesn't go below 99 or above 200 I am okay. No explanation regarding the fluctuations except as long as they don't stay high I shouldn't worry.
She said if everyone checked their blood several times before and after meals they might see fluctuations.
