Seeing Stoma Nurse Today In Prep. For RC on May 29th
My husband is getting a RC on May 29th. I’m thankful for any help/advice you can give me on what brands of stoma bags, powders, sprays, deodorants, wafers etc. to purchase for my husband.
Also, there are 1piece and 2 pieces…also belts. Can anyone share their experience with me on what works concerning the use of a stoma bag system? I hope I’m saying this correctly. It looks so easy with videos I’ve watched…but have read it actually takes time to place everything on the stoma…around it…and get it precise.
I’m thankful for any experiences you’ve had..learned from. May God bless you all with the gift of being totally Cured from cancer. IJN Amen 🙏

I use Hollister two piece setups. It takes time to get used to cutting and placing it. And I still get leaks sometimes. Just be patient. You may also get allergic reactions and fungal infections. Just be patient.
@jaxfl thank you! Yes, patience is the key. Bless you xx
Today, I am using a leg bag to extend storage from the regular bag for the first time. I am back in the office and running to the bathroom all the time is annoying.
Yes . I’m seeing the stoma nurse tomorrow . I’m interested from a female's perspective . I’m hoping there is disposable pouches available .
The ostomy nurses here are very good at working with the patient and spouse in teaching how to fit the pouch and seal it. Mayo uses the Hollister system and will provide you with supplies to get you home before your first order arrives. They came to do training three times in the 8 days we have been here. The last time my husband did the whole replacement himself. I thought we'd want to look at other brands, but I think we will stick with this.
I’m seeing my stoma nurse today for the first time. Curious as to how much info I will get. My surgery is tomorrow. Things will probably make more sense once I have my stoma to work with.
@jaxfl Good idea! I’m going to tell my husband about that…so he doesn’t have to keep getting up to use the bathroom. I have to look that up, also. I think the tube goes into the stoma and you secure the pouch to the upper leg. That should give the surrounding area around the stoma some time to breathe and be free. How did that work for you today?
@annepark When I spoke with Coloplast ….the nurse told me the stick-on one could last 3 to 4 days….which seems pretty long to keep it on. There is a special lotion to help take the stick on pouch off…gently. She was sending samples of a pouch…the deodorant to put in the pouch …if wanted. My husband seems to want a belt. The companies must have disposable ones. At night they have larger pouches so not to have to get up and go to the bathroom. But then the smaller pouches would have to be taken off. Very confusing. God bless 🙏
@ronzee50 i hope you received good info from your stoma nurse.Yes, i was told to wait until the stoma is done and then the nurse will order the supplies. I was told less is better. Just cut out a circle on the back of the pouch …fit it around the stoma. That was it. My husband wants to wear a belt so it doesn’t fall off. They said to keep it on for a few days…then change it. This was Coloplast. Other brands might be different. Also, keep the area around the stoma dry and gently use some spray…to ease the sticky part off. I praying that you are completely cured and free of any cancer after the RC. I’ll be praying for you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@bshultzia Hello, you must be so relieved the surgery is finally over. Did you drop your husband off at surgery and then go back to the hospital when he woke up…to stay with him? Or did you wait the whole time for him to wake up from the anesthesia? My daughter wants to be there when her dad wakes up. I’m afraid he might look sickly…and that will scare her. Was your husband able to talk to you when he was out of surgery? I know it is painful and I don’t know what to expect for her.
8 days and he did it himself! That’s such an accomplishment….not easy. Our insurance will pay up to 7 days in the hospital if the surgeon writes in for it. Are you taking your husband home soon or does he go to rehab? I really don’t know what to do until I speak with the nurse. We don’t have a bathroom on the first floor and the staircase…is steep. I hope my husband can make it up there when he gets home.
Now that it has been 8 days is he feeling less pain and able to walk…is he feeling better? Thank you and praying for your husband to be cured from all and every cancer🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏God bless, Rose
