Second reverse shoulder replacement

Posted by elainepow1 @elainepow1, May 30, 2023

I had a reverse shoulder replacement if March, 2022 which did not help me. I am scheduled for a second surgery June 9, 2023. I am seeing a different surgeon and am much encouraged. Have any of you had to have a second surgery?

Can you say why you are doing the second surgery. I am worried that the same thing will happen to me.

I had a regular replacement at Mayo’s Arizona in 2017, it never worked correctly and then I went to Steadman clinic in 2022 and was in formed it had failed and that their were metal fragments in the muscle
I had the replacement removed and went without a ball and socket for 12 weeks and then a special custom prothesis had to be made as so much bone was lost that the new sleeve goes almost to my elbow.
I am 3 weeks out today and dealing with a great deal of pain and swelling. I am icing it twice or more daily and going to PT. Need a oxycodone when it get up to a level 8-10.
I understand it is very rare to have this pain after a reversal but that is my experience. Progress is being made but very slow and flare ups still occur

Does not seem right to need a revision in just one year. I am glad you are seeing another surgeon, it would be interesting to know exactly what he diagnosed went wrong with the first TSR placement. Did you have CT and MRI scans beforehand for the purpose of providing your exact measurements to the producers of your prosthesis unit?
Good luck on your upcoming surgery, I hope this time they can get it right. Please keep posting here so we know what happens.

The first surgeon in his opinion is completely innocent. He does not know why this happened. I am not sure about the exact measurements the first time, but it has been done this time.

Thank you for your concerns. I will update.

Yes and I am almost 4 weeks out and because of the additional bone loss the nerve pain is intense but I do see improvement and am hopeful for a successful outcome
