Scared of Abaloparatide injection
My rheumatologist wants me to take the Abaloparatide injection ( Tymlos) but I’m terrified of the side effects. Has anyone used these daily injections so I can decide whether to try them or not.

Do your side effects last all day or are they only for a little while after doing the injection. Does it affect your bladder as well as if I took it in bed I’m stuck there so the bladder issues are a big thing for me. I’m really starting to think it’s not worth starting this treatment as every day my pain is bad so I don’t need anything else on top of this as it’s affecting me mentally now and becoming very depressed. Obviously I don’t want another fracture but I also don’t want to suffer horrible side effects either.
I have thought it strange I think I might have the bladder issue as well - I go all the time and wake up a couple of times a night. I’ll have to watch that and see if it continues. I have good days and bad days with pain, but the nausea and headache is usually after I do the injection at night. I know what you are dealing with in deciding. It’s a catch 22. You will know when you are ready or not. Personally I’m not sold on any of the osteoporosis treatments - I have gone off several meds as well. Keep me posted, and I’ll continue to give updates on my status. You are not alone.

Please let me know if it does cause bladder problems as I can’t get out of bed once lifted into it so I’m stuck. I’m seriously thinking not ready to start these injections now too many problems to deal with at the moment I can’t handle an6more.
@mandie4712, There is a diuretic in Forteo so it causes more frequent urination. When I was on Forteo, and actually now on a half dose of Tymlos, I would wake up an hour or so after my shot and have to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately, this has become a habit for me. Then I had to go again in about 2 hours. Tymlos also has a diuretic. The problem is frequent urination after the shot, but no infection.

Thanks for letting me know. There’s no way I can get up for a wee as I’m stuck in bed. I think I’m going to have to refuse the injections and take my chances. If I was able bodied I’d give them a try but I’m not able to walk at all so using the toilet is out of the question in the night and can’t keep waking up my husband.
@drsuefowler I can't find any evidence that either medication contains a diuretic. It seems odd to me. Do you have a source?
@mandie4712, If you were to take it, you probably would have to take it during the day. Then, when you had to urinate more at first after the shot, your husband would be awake to help you. There is no way to know if you would have other side effects when awake. I had dizziness and nausea so took the shot at bedtime and stayed on half a dose. Also, you could try it once to see, maybe not now but some time in the future. There are 8 clicks on the pen and you could just try 2 clicks at first. It definitely would be out of your system within 24 hours. I had good results on just 4 clicks, half a dose.
@drsuefowler Is a sudden urge to empty bladder after the injection or not plus how long after injection did the bladder and nausea etc last. Some people say for about an hour others say all day so it’s confusing. If I take it I’d definitely start on a low dose.
@mandie4712, I hardly had any side effects with only 2 clicks. Tymlos effects are only supposed to last for 4 hours. When I tried the full dose, the side effects lasted all day.
@njx58, Sodium Acetate Trihydrate in Tymlos is a diuretic according to Google. Mannitol in Forteo is a diuretic according to Google.
