Scar tissue after knee replacement

Posted by leithlane @leithlane, Jan 31, 2017

I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago . Through PT I have been working on breaking up the scar tissue only for it to regrow by the time I get back to PT two days later. I have been massaging at home, using a hand held massager and roller. It is painful and swollen. I am getting very disheartened. Any suggestions as to what else I can do. Has anyone had laser treatments to break up scar tissue? Were they effective?

@debbraw @babette @dduke Thank you for your replies…the isolation with this is just as bad as everything else, so I greatly appreciate this venue. The problem is, in my area, all of the Ortho Surgeons are in the same group and they don’t want to see me. The others I’ve reached out to, Steadman Clinic, won’t even see me because as they tell me, “They weren’t involved from the beginning”. I have researched Arthrofibrosis at nauseum, and My surgeon has said I definitely have it, but yet, I have really good ROM, so they aren’t certain. My surgeon also said he won’t do lysis of adhesions due to risk of infection. I have Kaiser insurance, and am self-employed (however unable to work since the surgeries), so I’m somewhat limited with options. They did a Nuclear Bone Scan last week where nothing was found. I see a Neurologist Wednesday. I’m just exhausted, frustrated, angry and don’t know what to do when every Specialist I see, says they can’t help me. We’ve discussed Arthrofibrosis before, and he told me “Kim, I out in the implants, what your body does with them, is out of my hands”. Sigh…anyone?

Your Dr. sounds like an arrogant ass. Find another Dr. That Kaiser will let you use. This procedure is being done all over the world. There was a risk kf infection during the initial implant, but they did that. Follow the money.

@kimbies1204 If I surgeon told me what yours told you about "what your body does with implants is out of my hands" I'd be calling an attorney. I've never heard anything so untrue and so irresponsible. You are his patient. His job is do, first, do not harm, and then do everything in his power to heal you. Is there another Kaiser hospital you can go to?

Sometimes Kaiser can b very good. and often they r very bad. Know of 1 older women that did not get good care until her adult children took her. Another one from Pacific Palisades won't go for help because Kaiser keeps her waiting over an hour. Another women w Kaiser (in her 50's) died of Chrons disease. Good luck, I would never sign w them.

@dduke Would you mind sharing which brand of CBD cream you use and whether or not one can get it via Amazon? There are so many out there! B.

I’m beginning to agree with you, my surgeon has really pissed me off lately. The problem is, Kaiser is so huge in the Northern Colorado area, and the group my surgeon is with has the monopoly on Orthopaedic care. I see a Neurologist Wednesday, if no insight or help, I’m going to go forward, very aggressively, to find someone or get Kaiser to open options for me. Thank you for engaging with me, it’s very supportive.

I wish we had more options on this area, as I e had to fight Kaiser on many issues. They now consider TKR’s as Out Patient procedures! They denied an antibiotic, they denied meds from the ER physician, they denied the CPM, etc. I’m really over their crap, also!

Hmmm…I’ve had others tell me to get an attorney as well. Sigh…he did both of my shoulder surgeries and was great. This time, I’m greatly disappointed and actually angry now. He shouldn’t be able to just wash his hands of me, and that’s the gesture he used when he said that. Problem is his group has the monopoly on Orthopaedic care in the area and the few I’ve reached out to, won’t see me.

Unfortunately, because I live in a small, mountain community, we have very few choices and it’s getting fewer and fewer every year.

@kimbies1204 Another thing I don't understand is how they simply "won't see you." You are a Kaiser member, they are the providers in your plan.

I was given prophylactic antibiotics (teicoplanin) prior to the arthroscopic lysis and debridment of left knee. Thankfully I did not get an infection post operatively.

I forgot to say pain wise, I have found amitriptyline at night and baclofen three times a day very beneficial, along with regular paracetamol, brufen twice a day. Immediately after surgery I was topping up with oramorph as needed

Kinbies, Isn't it time to talk to an INSURANCE COMMISSIONER in your state? Right now is open enrollment – Time to Switch?

I’ve contemplated contacting the Insurance Division and definitely going to look deeper into new insurance. Only problem is my location is a remote mountain area, with fewer and fewer healthcare options.
