Scabies

Posted by caminodos @caminodos, Dec 17, 2017

Was diagnosed with scabies 5 months ago. Husband and I have no idea how we contracted them. Dr. said we are clear, but still getting bumps on scalp and body. Anyone familiar with post-scabies syndrome?

Hello @caminodos. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! sorry to hear you are having to deal with scabies. It's a rather irritating thing experience.

I don't know about post scabies but the Mayo Clinic webpage says Itching may persist for some time after you apply medication to kill the mites. These steps may help you find relief from itching:
•Cool and soak your skin. Soaking in cool water or applying a cool, wet washcloth to irritated areas of your skin may minimize itching.
•Apply soothing lotion. Calamine lotion, available without a prescription, can effectively relieve the pain and itching of minor skin irritations.
•Take antihistamines. At your doctor's suggestion, you may find that over-the-counter antihistamines relieve the allergic symptoms caused by scabies.

Do you have any tips for future readers searching for information on this topic? Anything that you found helpful for anything you did that you found relief from?

Thanks! Just dealing with the collateral damage of this amazingly ignored problem by the medical community. It was dealt with like a very minor situation. When it takes over your life from weeks to months to eradicate the mite. My husband is a firefighter and we think it may have been pick up from a patient. Three different Dr.s with different diagnoses and plans of treatment. Still not a solid answer on post-scabies questions. Been getting most of my answers from Dr.s in Australia who are much more in tune with the problem. There are thousands of people in the U.S. dealing with this issue having the same questions and getting conflicting information. The U.S. is losing ground in the medical community in many areas of study. I'm glad I am at the end of the tunnel. But there are many still suffering and need the medical community to study and eliminate the mite with new and more effective medications. Dermatologist need to be educated and communicate with people in other countries that are much more versed in this problem of parasites. The mites are here and not only in the 3rd World. It is a very small world and these parasites are coming along for the plane ride too.

Well I just saw this post is 7 years ago but I wanted to touch base w you as to what methods worked for you. I bought an old house in upstate NY, moved in, found it was infested w mites, did not know what they were, went to 2 doctors who were criminally negligent and questioned my mental health, went to the NY extension svc at Cornell to get accurate bug ID, got same insulting treatment and now have this problem so bad I cannot even describe the horror. So I assume you got rid of them and what did it take? Did you have them all thru your house? Thank you

I'm having scabies for more than 6 months. I already saw many dermatologists and I'm not getting any better. I already used 17 tubes of permethrin, 6 doses of Ivermectin, and dozens over-the-counter medications. My skin is destroyed. I feel sick and really tired all the time. I'm so desperate and I don't know what else I can do. Please, somebody help me!

@ecaamano22 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect!

I certainly hope today finds you feeling better. Here is an article from Mayo Clinic about scabies: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/scabies/symptoms-causes/syc-20377378
If you have seen many dermatologists, have any of them taken a biopsy to see exactly what can be used to treat this skin condition? Do you know how you may have gotten the infection?

There is no need to treat scabies any longer.
Continuing the treatment over and over again is
sensitizing your skin and causing itch and irritation.
It becomes very difficult to let go of the idea that
we still have the problem when the itch doesn’t go
away quickly.
Was your first diagnosis made by an experienced
dermatologist.?
Have you found anybody you have contact with having
symptoms. It is time to calm your skin down with gentle
prescription meds for irritation and not harsh meds.
Work with your preferred dermatologist and follow their plan to get you more comfortable and look
for other reasons you may be . If your derm does
a scraping or a biopsy and other testing that may help you find answers and best treatment. You need follow
up and guidance to recover from the thought that you
are not cured. I have had scabies and it takes time for
the irritation and itch to go away. Sometimes as long
as 2 months. That is why it is a good plan to get reexamined and reassured.
