Safest infusion for 86 year old

Posted by amw1940 @amw1940, Sep 21 1:47pm

Hello. I am new to this group. I am 86 years old and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis last spring. Endocrinologist wants me to start Prolia or Reclast.
I am a colon cancer survivor, have sarcoidosis, leaky valve, enlarged thyroid glands. Just finished getting one tooth implant, otherwise e teeth healthy. Cannot take medication for pain because Tylenol and antibiotics cause liver enzymes to spike.
I am afraid of the side effects of Reclast and prolia and being on these forever.
Please share your experience.
Thank you
I

Thank you responding. Met with endocrinologist today. Told her how distressed I am about starting meds, that I would like to wait, try diet and strength training at gym. She allowed me to make that decision next 6 months. I know it’s delaying the inevitable, but maybe then I will be more accepting and allow a higher power to watch over me.
Wishing you well.

@amw1940 ---definitely do what you are comfortable with and maybe you'll have some good luck with building bone but if I were you, I would definitely contact a nutritionist Doctor Who could give you some insight about your diet. Sometimes there are foods that can increase your bones because they're high in the right nutrition. Good luck.

Can’t say which is safest for you but I can say I had Reclast once and refused it a second time. I am on Prolia and the side effects have not been bad. I have a bigger fear of fractures!

I met with endocrinologist today. I told her how distressed I was re starting meds that I will have to continue forever. She pointed out just as people with diabetes, high blood pressures , etc need to take meds for the rest of their life. So it is with osteoporosis. We weren’t able to agree on a which to go with so I asked to wait, try diet and strenghtening exercise at gym. She was concerned I would get hurt at gym and diet was not going to help build bone. So the decision was put off for 6 months when I may be more accepting of the situation and leave the decision to a higher power to take care of me.
Thank you for responding.

@amw1940 I am 85 and have had 3 Reclast infusions. I have had no side effects other than a few aches the next day. Otherwise nothing.

I am an 83 yr old and did do Reclast injections in my late 70’s with just a little tiredness a day after. I would prefer doing it again after five years to maintain rather than do Evenity. My personal choice. I too can’t take anything for pain, so ice is my friend. Reading everyone’s comments has led me to do a lot more research and in the end I need to trust God. Having worked in the medical field for 37 years, and sitting in on case studies with specialists talking about a particular case, they will come up with different treatments. This is being validated by shared information of what their endocrinologist is telling them.
I think in the future AI has a great use for better diagnosis and treatment. They are using it now recording patient/doctor visits, so all is recorded on the patient’s chart. The doctor will review it and delete non essential information. This helps the doctor stay focused on the patient by not having to type the information in the chart, and it will be more complete and accurate.

Do you mean you were diagnosed with osteoporosis? Osteoarthritis is not treated with those drugs unless this is a new thing.

If you have osteoporosis, you need to build bone rather than maintain.
I would definitely take Evenity which is 12 monthly infusions, little side effects and also slows down bone loss.
If you take some other meds first (biophosphonstes like Fosamax ) they blunt the effect of the bone building one’s.

@donnabutcher Ive read Evenity bulds bone best and fastest but my heart dr recommended against due to "moderate arterial blockage' and family CV history unfortunately.
