Root canal without Epinephrine

Posted by sophiarose @sophiarose, Jun 6 7:23am

Sorry I missed the group last night
I so wanted to make it home from the dentist to discuss my situation
I have a functioning bottom right wisdom tooth that needs a root canal
I am to be told it can’t be done because I can’t take epinephrine if epinephrine isn’t used I will be getting a root canal without sedation
Has anyone else had this problem?
The dentist and my oncologist spoke and decided it needs to be pulled
I will have to be put completely out because again I can’t take epinephrine
The problem now is if I am put completely out I have to be given
500 mcg of octreotide before and if needed after so that I don’t have a carcinoid crisis
I live on Long Island just outside of Manhattan
Anyone know an oral surgeon that will accommodate?
My final issue is that Medicare will not pay because it is dental even if I have to get this done in a hospital setting
If anybody can give any advice I would appreciate it
Thank you

I’m confused, are you allergic to Epi?

I'm a NETs patient on monthly Lanreotide. I just had a tooth pulled using Lidocaine at a local pain killer. As I understand it, Epinephrine is blood vessel constrictor used to reduce bleeding and it also extends the effectiveness of a pain killer like Lidocaine. Maybe you could get the tooth pulled with only Lidocaine? Also, have you had a carcinoid crisis before? Is there evidence that pulling a tooth has caused one? Interesting situation.

I have carcinoid syndrome per my surgeon. I just went and got a tooth pulled. Didn't take Octreotide or anything else. Didn't have any problem with it. Good luck with this.

No I am not
When you have neuroendocrine cancer you have a risk of having a carcinoid crisis if you take epi

Was it a bottom wisdom tooth?
From what the dentist told me bottom wisdom teeth are a whole other situation and in order for the pain killer to work you have to use epi
If it was an upper there wouldn’t be a problem
I am only getting it pulled because I can’t do a root canal because I can’t take epi
There always seems to be another hurdle

It was an infected bottom Molar I had pulled. I wonder if there is a NETs specialist dentist out there somewhere? I wonder what's the chance of having a crisis due to epi? That's gotta be rare.

I was hoping putting the situation out there someone would now a NRT dentist
As for the crisis being rare it probably is but then again I have a rare cancer
I am not taking any chances I have too much to stay ahead
Thank you

I just had 2 root canals and had epinephrine. I called my oncologist before them and he checked with a pharmacist and both said it was fine.

Are you not supposed to have epinephrine? Fortunately I was fine after but want to find out as I need more dental work.

Thanks

The dentist called my oncologist and he said absolutely no epinephrine so I need to have the tooth pulled under anesthesia and get a dose of octreotide before they give me the anesthesia which they did with 2 previous surgeries I had a few years ago
All so I don’t have a carcinoid crisis situation
Very odd because awhile ago I got an emergency card from one of the groups and the main NoNo was No epi
I have no idea what’s make me different
Maybe because I have carcinoid symptoms of flushing and diarrhea
Glad all went well with you
