ROM after TKR

Posted by budisnothome @budisnothome, Dec 2, 2024

WOW. So much pain. Two weeks in and I am 15 degrees short of straight and only bend to 70. Three weeks in and at 10 degrees short and at 90 bent. How far have others been able to get? What has helped with ROM? PT says keep at it and keep pain under control. So hard to do and meds don't do much anymore. Ice help sone but get tired of always stopping to ice. Any other thoughts? Has anyone tried an exercise bike this soon?

You’re doing great with those numbers. I had those at 10 weeks!
Don’t forget to take a pain med an hour before therapy. Get as much PT as possible and sleep with an ice machine, with your leg elevated.
Best wishes!

Don't lose hope. It has only been two weeks
Patience and steady persistence are the name of the game. You've just had major surgery. Contact the surgical team about pain management.

I would wait till PT said a bike is ok....it took me over two months and then it hurt the first time completely around. I started doing it backwards first as it's easier. You need to get to a certain ROM before you can ride a bike but can't remember what it was.

At two weeks you're in the early stages of a long recovery and finding a picture of a normal knee difficult. The single most important factor in gaining ROM will be PT and bending the knee as much as your pain level allows. This is where many TKR recipients understanderable give up, because pain is a great motivator. You'll find that you will progress in small increments that you may not realize. One therapist I had took ROM readings every session, another took ROM readings evry 5 sessions mainly becuase they wanted me to see improvement. Hang in there and youll see progress.
