Rheumatoid Arthritis and alcohol.

Posted by yatrik @yatrik, 1 day ago

I just started 10 mg of Methotrexate once a week with 2000 mcg everyday. I am 77 years old and like to have glass of wine (red) few times a week. Any one has personal experience with use of alcohol and the MTX in these quantities?
Thank you

Hey there!
I have read that alcohol significantly increases the risk for liver damage while taking methotrexate. So as a rule alcohol should be avoided.
Generally speaking, guidelines say to limit yourself to two 4-6 oz glasses per week .
All the best 🙏🏻

Hi! It’s great that you’re managing your rheumatoid arthritis with methotrexate and looking into how it might interact with your wine habit. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve heard from others on methotrexate that moderate alcohol, like a glass of red wine a few times a week, is often okay, but it’s critical to check with your rheumatologist since methotrexate can stress the liver. Some folks I know on similar doses (10 mg weekly) were advised to limit alcohol to one or two drinks per week to stay safe. Regular liver function tests are also key to monitor any effects.
