TMJ Patient RoundTable Project: Status Update

https://tmj.org/living-with-tmj/tmj-implants/tmj-roundtable-project/

The TMJ Patient RoundTable is also the first patient-led project to be conducted under the auspices of the Medical Device Epidemiology Network (MDEpiNet), a public-private partnership developed to bring real--world data-patient experiences together with a broad array of experts to conduct studies aimed at improving outcomes for implant patients worldwide. The unique aspect of the RoundTable initiative is its patient-centeredness and in that regard, we expect to involve you, the TMJ patients, in aspects of the project as it enfolds.

The TMJ Patient RoundTable was initiated by a need to find out why some TMJ patients have successful outcomes from implant surgery, while others do not. It has evolved into a comprehensive study of all aspects of temporomandibular disorders and how these various aspects interact to affect patient outcomes. The goal is to establish a scientifically valid road map that can reliably predict treatment outcomes for individual patients. The long-term goal seeks to incorporate different study topics into the project as it evolves over time.

You had TMJ surgery at Mayo? Did your insurance cover it? I have been to so many doctors and dentists and PTs. An MRI showed that I had very little blood flow to my right jar joint. Haven't felt well in over a year.

No, sorry. I was responding to someone’s comment about general anesthesia and TMJ. My joint pain was helped by my PT, she did a maneuver to my jaw and the pain stopped. It will occasionally ache but I did not have trouble after surgery, which was on my back. My jaw pain started after biting down on a hard energy bar, i heard it pop. No one could offer any help, meaning my primary doctor nor my dentist, they pretty much just shook their heads. Your issue sounds different, I pray you find a doctor who can help you!

I have developed clicking in my right jaw when i chew or open my mouth too wide, My dentist says I probably grind my teeth and will take a while to recover. I need to sing in a group and cannot hold my jaw as I am also playing the piano. Is there a support I can wear or can I tape the joint

There is a local physical therapist here who is well known for successfully treating TMJ with oral exercises. All the local dentists refer patients to him.

Hi Amanda

Thank you so much for your help with the group and websites.
I have seen a doctor at Mayo in Rochester, MN. First by video then in person. My surgery is scheduled for May 25th at St. Mary’s in Rochester.
I’ve looked up Vlogs and haven’t found too many regarding this surgery(is it an easy surgery? Is recovery easy?).
It’s only 4 weeks away now, I can ask questions when I get up there.

The surgeon says my bite is off. They would essentially break the jaw and put s screw in the roof of my mouth. They would then periodically adjust the screw to slowly widen my upper jaw so my bite would be aligned by the end of 6-8 weeks. They would clean out some bone chips from me trying to force my mouth to close the first time it locked open many years ago. Sounds like fun!! Sign me up. Uhhh supposed it would be a great diet. Not exactly running to the registration.

TMJ not so fun..

Hi Dawn so grateful to hear what kind of surgery/treatment available. I have severe Trismus from HNC, cannot open my mouth at all. Luckily for me I am missing a molar that I can use for my prescriptions.
I had a video appointment appointment with a TMD specialist who just said to put chopsticks in my mouth a do some excercises. That was last September. Was diagnosed with the cancer in February seems it started on my tonsil and some of the mass is in the muscle that moves my jaw, had surgery and am now starting chemo radiation treatments. But now that I know there is a method I can push for that when I finally meet with the expert next month. I am a Kaiser Permanente patient retired on very limited funds so can't really afford to look elsewhere.
Anyway sorry for the long in and on hear but really truly very happy for sharing your experiences Lyn
