Renal nutritionist

Posted by susangail53 @susangail53, Nov 16 9:28am

I am so tired of hearing what you can and cannot eat with PKD. I've heard plant based keto is excellent for function, then I read keto with grass fed beef and mostly plants is better. I always thought ketosis is bad for the kidneys. So...I've made an appointment with a renal nutritionist at my nephrologist's office in January. Has anyone used a renal nutritionist? Is it helpful or will I just be wasting more time with this disease when nothing will actually help? Thanks for your advice!!!

@susangail53 Diet seems to be the subject of so many questions and misinformation. First off, we are all different. What might work for one person in detail, is not always the best path for someone else. There are generalities. Watch your protein intake, along with phosphorous, calcium, sugars, potassium. Hydration is critical.

I have other health concerns besides kidney issues, so what works for me may not work for you. I have a renal dietician at my dialysis center who helps me, and answers so many questions I have! Beyond that, if you want to find a renal dietician, here is the link to renal dietician arm of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: https://www.renalnutrition.org/home Look on the top toolbar where there is a way to find a renal nutritionist in your area.

Hope this helps,
Ginger

All my potassium, protein, phosphorus, etc levels are normal. I do have an
appointment with the renal dietician at my nephrologist's office. The
doctor told me she will know everything about my kidney issues, as well as
other things, when I meet with her. Hoping this helps! Thanks!

I had kidney removed in January 2024. In mid 2023 with 2 kidneys my GFR was over 60. Now with one kidney in November 2024 my GFR is 35. I have read, researched and try to do my best when it comes to drinking water and diet. I have come across a talk given by a nephrologist that goes over diet and its effect on your kidneys. The talk is one hour and it is the most informative Information on diet I have seen to date. The information given on how kidneys work was also well done and in easily understood terms. I do not know the policy on linking files to this site. However, if anyone is interested you can send a private message and I will send a link or if I am allowed to place a link someone can let me know. More information is never a bad thing. We are all seeking. Blessings.

I am very interested in this link as well. Had 2 tumors off left kidney mid Oct. All metabolic panel items are back up to GOOD. But I'd like to hear pointers from renal dietitian on how to proceed; I've only been given generalizations. I got a miracle last mo w 100% of tumors removed w good margins, and I do not want to mess this up! I've also seen lots of web links shared on Mayo Connect. God bless you in your journey.

@dougr19 Yes, please post the link! When a member is new, there is a moratorium on what they can post for links and such. But you are past that phase, and it looks like so many of us would be interested in seeing this.

Thank you for informing me about links, therefore here are two links. The first is video by a nephrologists. His topic is nutrition. The second is a power point presentation by a renal dietician given at the University of Michigan.

I am 69 and have Polycystic Kidney disease. Egfr 37. Egfr was 51 two years ago. I have a renal dietician who suggested Keto diet. (Plant based). I called a top Nephrologist I knew at Boston’s Tuft University hospital-Dr. Ron Perrone. He said there are not enough studies on safety and efficacy for keto diets. He said follow a reasonable heart healthy diet like the Mediterranean diet. My nutritionist agreed with Dr. Perrone. She did say that I need to cut out white sugar and processed foods and continue to drink plenty of water. I bought the book: The Cooking Doc’s Kidney-Healthy Cooking book by Blake Shusterman, MD. It has delicious recipes, motivational stories and the latest science. My egfr remains stable at 37 and I feel good. He is on youtube and even has interactive podcasts to answer any questions you may have on diet and kidney disease. Very helpful to me!
