Referred dr doesn’t have experience in cervical/lumbar issues

I asked for referral to physiatrist but the person they are putting me with is experienced in hand issues. I have chronic cervical and lumbar fusions. Does Mayo just put you with whoever has availability?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Visiting Mayo Clinic Support Group.

@retirement75, I suggest that you contact the appointment office to get clarification and to discuss the range of expertise of the physician you will first be seeing. This physician is but a starting point, your quarterback so to speak.

Mayo Clinic has a team model of care, which means that members of a multidisciplinary group of experts are called in as needed to help you. Your multidisciplinary team may include doctors from several medical and surgical specialties, including neurology, radiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, orthopedic surgery, pain medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, etc. Having all this expertise in a single place, focused on you, means that you're not just getting one opinion. Your care is discussed among team members, your test results are available quickly and appointments are scheduled in coordination. The most highly specialized experts in the world are working with you.

But like I said, it is probably best to call the appointment office at the campus where you are going to get clarification. Click this link to get the phone numbers: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
