Anyone else have a Redundant / Tortuous Colon?

Posted by onaquest @onaquest, Nov 7, 2018

Hello. Anyone else out there that has a redundant/ tortured colon? I was diagnosed with this a few years ago. I’m usually ok, but if I get constipated, I get sick for a week or two. Last year my gastroenterologist referred me to a surgeon for urgent surgery to remove some of my colon. The surgeon I ended up seeing (not on the recommended list by my gastro doc due to others not available for a long time) said he believed I could live with the redundant colon if I followed a low FODMAP diet. I tried the diet religiously, scientifically (I’m a scientist), and I found it’s not the food I eat that causes these bouts of constipation. The only item I’ve found that might cause the bouts is coffee every day. An occasional coffee seems fine. What has helped me stay regular in a big way is Benefiber (or any pure wheat dextrose generic) three times per day. Lots of fluid.

My gastro doc was upset with the surgeon and said I’d regret not having the surgery. He fears I will end up in an emergency situation. I have searched the Mayo site and don’t find anything about redundant/ tortured colon. Are any Mayo docs doing research or treat this condition? Anyone else suffer from this too?
Thank you! -Jayne

I have this, as well as Celiac, Microscopic Colitis (Collagenous), and EPI (Pancreatic Enzyme Insufficiency). Unfortunately, meds and diet haven't really done much. Just something I will need to live with.

Greetings…When you used the Benefiber did you start gradually?I have a redundant colon and I have to use slippery elm, I cannot use psyllium husk at all.. I tried Benefiber but I wasn’t consistent with it..I didn’t start having any problems until 5 years ago…It’s hard to stay regular even though I eat a very healthy diet..I just want to stay regular..I appreciate any info..Thanks a bunch..

Most recent diverticulitis event presented with very orange urine. Although my culture was clear, the doctor prescribed Flagyl and Cipro. I had every side effect rash, vomiting, and green stools in addition to the diarrhea and pain of diverticulitis. I later read that the inflamed colon lying against the bladder can cause urine discoloration. Has anyone else experienced this symptom?

@bla47 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I've not heard of orange urine, and it would startle me, for sure.

Did your doctor confirm that this was the reason for the orange urine? Is the diverticulitis event all done now? Also wondering if you have a redundant colon?

Yes, redundant colon. Symptoms mostly resolved from onset one month ago. Still noticing reddish gel like residue. The side effects of the antibiotics have resolved. Colonoscopy in April. Yeah

I had a surgeon who said that I needed surgery in my sphincter muscles. Due to the pressure of everything that was happening in my colon my sphincter muscles had become very tight and almost closed. I had botox, in one sphincter, muscle and dilation in the other this was done under anesthesia. It took a few weeks to stabilize, at least those muscles were working. So you might want to check what's happening with the muscles. In the meantime, I have taken liquid magnesium sitrate at night, like 4 oz to make it flow quicker. And easier, I make sure I do Yoga and crunch. The muscles of the colon tighter on the outbreast, an expand the muscles of your colon on the inbreath
Working the inside organs, I do a lot of that. My surgeon said for me every three or four days, I need to take an enema to clear out the residue of the feces collecting in the corners of my colon. I also do high fiber which you probably do lots of water because even though food isn't the problem. It is an element of what I must be considering. So that the feces is able to be thin and flexible enough to pass through the tiny openings in my colon

Hi I am new to this site, Sorry you are all also going through this. I have a redundant colon also, and get a pressing, swollen feeling in my left groin area often. Like others on here I feel I have slow digestion. I also have had small balls, not normal s shape, for many many years. I have been loading up on all fibre and drinking lots too but have had no change.I have been reading lately that insoluble fibre is not good for redundant bowel(as it bulks you up and therefore is more difficult to go), but soluble fibre is great, Is anyone on here doing this diet and is it working for you?

i've just stumbled onto your entry. I also have been diagnosed with a redundant bowel. I have been dealing with bowel issues now since cancer of the uterus long story short scar tissue from surgery and radiation exacerbate my problem. I have had a number of hospitalizations due to obstructions in the bell. I have been taking in my diet soluble fiber, but I've also discovered that it is volume small meals. I've lost a lot of weight over the years because of this condition drinking a lot of fluid obviously helps the bowel stay hydrated and moving things along. I blend a lot of of my food when I have an obstruction, I've ate very little if nothing over several days starting gradually again with vegetable broth, crackers I love fiber I miss my diet, but I am still able to manage. I eat red lentil pasta, which has fiber and much better for you. Better flour I think lots of fish wild caught obviously I love beetroot, but can only treat myself with a serving of beetroot. Maybe once a week twice if I'm lucky it's all about managing what you can handle and of course smaller meals. Slice of toast in the morning with yogurt, avocado, and Vegemite lunch will be the pasta and tuna. I use a lot of yogh for my sources, adding different flavors and spices. I have to be careful not to irritate my bowel too much with spicy but all in all they end of an evening because my digestion is so slow I'm not usually very hungry I may have some crackers with goat cheese or cheese and a little bit more avocado stewed pears in the baby food aisle. Also add with yogurt. I am trying to figure out if I should have a resection of my bowel. I'm 71 Very active garden. I walk three or 4 miles every day do my walking lunges and squats. I wish you well I hope any of this information has been helpful in someway and all the best. God bless and good luck.
