Recovery From Colorectal Surgery

After several years of chronic pain from having my colon and rectum removed I am now being told I should have had physical therapy shortly after the surgery to help reduce the pain. Is this the norm? At the moment, perhaps after so many years after the surgery, the exercises appear to be making the pain is worse.
