I have a mass on my colon, and am in need of a Gastroenterologist or a Colorectal Surgeon to give me a Colonoscopy. Anyone can refer me to any one of them or both? Can someone also tell me for a Colonoscopy is it better to have it done by a Surgeon in case they have to take a biopsy of the mass or perhaps take it out completely or use a Gastroenterologist who only does procedures?
Please respond back a.s.a.p. Thanks!
Your surgeon is not typically the one to do your colonoscopy. At Mayo they will have the doctor doing your scopes take your biopsies and handle the minor aspects, like polyps. My GI doctors are specialists but I didn’t get referrals and have always had amazing doctors. If you already know you have a mass, I would personally start with a surgeon to see what route to take and who he/she works with. Wishing you the best.

Hello, Thanks for the response! Can you please tell me the names of the Gastro Drs. you saw? Can you also tell me what you did to get appointments with these good GI Drs. sooner than later? I can’t seem to get an appointment at the GI Dept they only give appointments months in advance not days! I can’t wait months to have a colonoscopy! I’ve already waited over 1 month after I got the news that I have a mass on my colon because I can’t seem to find a good Dr who I trust! Have you had colonoscopies?
Please respond back a.s.a.p. as I am very worried about my condition, and I know NO ONE here in Az. to talk with regarding my problem!
Thanks!
J.P.
Hi there again, Thanks for the response but I don’t live near Rochester, and I can’t travel right now. I have a Mayo Clinic here in Phoenix but they won’t give me an appointment soon, they give them a month or 2 or more. They won’t budge on that! As a matter of fact if you make a big deal about it they won’t see you at all! They are very independent about their doctors, and appointments! The other doctors here in the area are just average, and they too are filled up with appointments. This place needs more doctors!
Can you tell me what I should do?

Hello…I have had my colon, spleen, gall bladder, had 2 small intestine resections and total hysterectomy as a result of a disease called Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma…this is a form of asbestos poisoning which takes hold of one’s peritoneal area. Since my last operation (12 hour operation with internal chemo ) (and I have had about 15 operations over the past 7 years) I have had terrible digestive issues and pain …I cannot eat without much pain and I cannot go to the toilet without three daily enimas. I have tried all the SIBO treatments, I eat a restricted diet without carbs and dairy…I exercise, I try to be positive, I do it all by the book and a bit more and still I suffer so so much…I cannot work, I cannot socialise properly and I am sad…I know I am very lucky to be alive but I suffer so and I am not myself….so you asked 🙂 and this is half the story…I am still looking for answers to find a more normal less painful life….
and by the way I went cold turkey off all the opioids after 5 years which was hell…but it is behind me…drug free except some experimental drugs for the lack of motility…

Hello, I am VERY SORRY to hear about all of your health problems, and concerns. You really are a strong person to have endured all the pain that you went through. Would it be possible if you can recommend a gastro dr., or a colorectal surgeon for me to go to? I am having aching, and pain on my right side which is probably from a mass on my colon. I’ve been trying to find a top dr to do a colonoscopy without any luck! They all are very busy, and don’t have time for me! I don’t want to go to the E.R. if I don’t have to!
Take care, and again I wish you well, and G-d Bless!
J.P. (by the way, I am a woman) lol

Try a teaching hospital’s GI clinic and if it’s not soon enough get on their cancellation list. Or get another doc to get you in sooner. And insist nicely- you deserve timely care. I had a small bowel resection am doing well. Good luck.

Hi @joyful1,
I realize this is stressful, and that you are doing all you can to receive the best possible care. Appointments at Mayo Clinic are prioritized on the basis of medical need.
Here’s more information about the Gastroenterology & Hematology division in Mayo Clinic, AZ which may help you narrow down your search:

Don’t know if Dr. Ken Wang with Mayo Clinic in Rochester does Colo-rectal surgery but he is a Gastroenterology MD. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate him a 19, he’s that good. Just back from having my esophagus scoped and although I didn’t get the news I was hoping for, (they found some Barrett’s cells in the Biopsies they took) but no dysplasia, so back in 4 mo instead of 12 mo. Good luck!
