Has anyone tried an infusion of RECLAST for osteoporosis treatment?
Hi Transplant Family!
Has anyone tried an infusion of RECLAST for osteoporosis treatment? If so, can you please let me know your experience with that osteoporosis medication?
Many thanks!! 😊

Yes I was on it for a few years but am now on my ‘holiday’ as you cannot be on it indefinitely. I had no issues with it. It did help my osteoporosis scores a bit.

3 ReactionsHi. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis prior to my transplant. . I had the reclast infusion 3 months post transplant. I suffered from some side effects that were pretty severe. I had joint pain in every joint. For months, there were days that I could hardly get out of bed. I spoke with my team and my Dr referred me to a rheumatologist, who tested me for different autoimmune diseases. My tests came back negative. I’m doing much better now, but I am 13 months post my infusion. I just had bone density exam and I’m still waiting for the results from the doctor. From what I can see it is working and has improved my bone loss. I will be discussing, some alternatives, personally another infusion is not worth the side effects I experienced. I’ve spoken with several people who have taken Reclast as prescribed with zero side effects. I discovered the osteoporosis and bone health, support group through Mayo. I would encourage you to follow and read through some of the discussions about reclast. I found it very informative. Wishing you the best of luck.

4 ReactionsHi. I am a liver transplant patient but have no osteoporosis. My wife has never had a transplant but has osteoporosis and has had 3 falls/acidents with broken bones in the last 2 years. She and our insurance provider tried a couple of other medications for it and both had side effects that did not go well. About 6 months back they tried Recalst. We have good insurance and can afford it but it was the most expensive option if that matters. She likes just one shot every 6 months and nothing daily. Also no side effects to date. Six months probably too early to tell but she is glad she switched from the others to it. For what it's worth. Best of luck.

3 ReactionsKidney Transplant 7/25/23. Due to anti rejection meds - significant bone loss 71% why bone density scans were pre transplant and post. I have had my second annual Reclast infusion. My endocrinologist had me do a bone scan before the 2nd annual Reclast infusion to see if any further bone loss had occurred. There was no change of bone loss after my 1st year prior Reclast infusion before doing the 2nd annual Reclast infusion which means Reclast infusion year prior no more further bone loss in 1 yr bc Reclast infusion. She will order 1 more next Aug 3rd annual. I had NO side effects w 2 Reclast infusions w Kidney Transplant. Definitely one must drink a lot of water (gal) day before and after infusion said infusion ctr.
I did not ask why only 3 Reclast infusions (3 annuals) if would cause problems after. I am stumped what perfect calcium/ magnesium/ Vit D ratio.
I do take 1,000 mg Vit D required post transplant and mag glycinate
It's the calcium type I'm stuck on. I have heard also a tiny bit Vit K mixed in supplement for absorption
but stumped.

4 ReactionsI've had 3 Reclast infusions, the last one was several years ago. It did help improve my bone density. It's still not great though - I will see my endocrinologist in March and see if she recommends more - of course if she does I'll check with my transplant team first.
