Reclast BEWARE causes broken femur!
Doctor put me on Reclast for 3 years. By third year after iv left leg hurting and getting weaker. Finally, one day leg gave out and I fell to the ground with broken femur. Emergency Surgery. After this several doctors told me it was due to Reclast. Was never told Reclast could do this. Women should avoid this iv. I will post what happened to me wherever I can. To put this drug out knowing it can cause a broken femur is horrible. Women should be told this side effect before receiving the drug. Having a broken femur is a terrible thing with the pain and surgery. I am 3 months out from surgery and still recovering. Now my doctors tell me I should not get anymore reclast! Too late for my broken Femur! Beware of Reclast!

Yes to the rebound issue. My Dexa after Evenity went from 2.9 to 1.9 (spine), 2.6 from 2.5 (fem nexk) and 1.8 from 1.9 (total hip. Originally, my doctor and indicated that I could go on a drug holiday after Evenity/Prolia but now she is suggesting that I will lose any gains if I stop meds. I was not offered HRT because I am breast cancer survivor and now its too late (hysterectomy 9 yrs ago). In hindsignht, that would have been a good option.

4 Reactions@gussie I am sorry to hear about your daughters. I too have 2 daughters and I have forwarned them about osteoporosis. They are in their late 20s so they are still building bone and have talked to them about calcium, weightlifting, and making sure they have all the necessary minerals to build bone. I wasn’t diagnosed until I turned 63 through a DExA, so I have also told them to start getting tested before (around age 50), during and after menopause.
Incidentally, my grandmother must have had OP. She fractured her wrist in her 80s and she lived until she was 95. My mother tripped and fell last year; she was 90 and she had a total hip replacement. She is very active and still drives. She did tell me recently that she was diagnosed with osteopenia in the 1990s and she decided NOT to go on meds. That is over 25 years ago!
I hope that even though the disease itself is hereditary, I can also learn from my grandmother and mother that they did fine WITHOUT medication and perhaps their bone QUALITY has been handed down to me as well. They both ate very well and were always very active too.
So did you end up taking any meds? How are your tscores now?

5 ReactionsMy endocrinologist put my on Reclast infusions. After the second infusion my left femur broke with no warning. I walked about 30 feet and next thing I knew I was on the ground in disbelief.
After surgery and rehab I went to an osteoporosis specialist and he informed me that the breakage most likely was due to Reclast. He put me on Prolia and my bone mass has increased since then. A little jab every 6 months. 2 years ago my Dexascan show 7 percent bone improvement.
I take 600 mg of calcium twice a day and d3 daily.
I am a 76 year old male.

Are you saying that reclast then prolia are your first meds? Has she/he talked to you about anabolics and a drug sequencing plan?

1 Reaction@gravity3 No. That’s just how my endocrinologist started me. Prolia is mainly for women but since Reclast failed me I was permitted to start Prolia injections.
I don’t know the odds of breaking a femur with Reclast. Maybe doctors should give the patient the choice of drugs knowing that there’s a chance of broken femurs.
I had to stay in a rehab hospital til I could walk which took me about a month.

2 ReactionsI read this post because the 'broken femur after that med' caught my attention.
One month in rehab to walk again. That's quite a situation.
You feel better now tho right? The change in med is helping.
That's good news. I hope you've continued
recovering.
Thanks for describing this experience here.
I agree that such info re potential breaking of bones should be presented to someone before they decide to try it. Did you find out any more about how common those odds are?
Hope I'm not asking too many questions. Yikes, what a shock that fall & why must have been.
Seems you've got determination in your personality.
Good on you & all the best.

1 Reaction@tfmiller Hi. Well the surgeon who fixed my leg mentioned that half the people my age who break a femur die within 5 years. So I was determined not to be that person.
The inserted a titanium rod and my leg muscles were cut. After the operation I could not lift my leg at all. It was quite funny to me to look at my leg and say” lift” and nothing happens.
That was 4 years ago. I’ve been on Prolia since then and my Decsa scan showed 7 percent improvement in my legs. My next test is in December. I will share the results then.
I do a lot of walking and hiking and I attribute that to part of the improvement.

2 Reactions@mwendt54 I’d go take care of that dental work ASAP!!!
@tfmiller
We all have choices but it is up to each of us to do our own research and be able to discuss treatment plans with our doctors. That is now my approach at 77.
