Reclast and Omeprazole

Posted by mistea @mistea, Sep 19, 2022

Hi! I just joined after extensively researching for an answer to my dilemma. At 65, and after supplementing and exercising, I have osteoporosis in my lumbar spine of 2.9. My endocrinologist initially recommended Fosamax (which I had previously taken for 10 years, ending 10 years ago). But after an endoscopy found Barretts esophagus with no dysplasia, my GI recommends lifelong Omeprazole, starting immediately and my Endocrine recommends Reclast. I am deeply concerned about the effect of Omeprazole on my bone health - warnings include osteoporosis, and a reclast injection with side effects. Both drugs have a risk of kidney complications.
Don't know what to do - does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Thank you!

My recent DEXA scan showed osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. my NP wants me to take Reclast. I have 2 concerns with taking this medication. 1. I have periodontal disease. 2. I have read you can only take this medication for 3-5 years. I am wondering what a person does after they can no longer take Reclast

You might want to consider getting a low dose ReClast infusion. I can attach a study showing even 1 mg to be effective. I do not know if that would extend the number of years you could take it, however.

Hi! I already got Reclast 5 mg infusion. The usual dose. For next time, I need to think about it.
However, my endocrinologist suggested Prednisone (steroid) for anti inflammatory purposes. It’s helped me. I was in excruciating pain, and had to visit ER.
Wish there was more clearer info on how to deal with side effects. I assumed 2 days would be enough. One needs minimum week or more for first infusion, it’s symptoms.
So steroids, calcium and hydration are key I learnt, to mitigate side effects of bone and muscle pain. At the moment I am not ready for my next year’s treatment but will decide based on my bone density. Aim to focus on strength training and diet in the meantime.

Something to think about.

Drug company pursues high dose of profits despite risks to patients

Amgen’s cancer drug, Lumakras, was granted accelerated FDA approval in 2021 at a daily dose of 960 mg. A subsequent trial indicated that while the 960 mg dose extends life by a month more on average, a lower 240 mg dose offers similar efficacy with reduced toxicity. That should be good news for patients looking to reduce the diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and mouth sores that can occur. However, despite these findings, Amgen continues to market it at the higher dosage and is moving forward with the process of final FDA approval at that level.

I am in the same situation. Was on Fosamax for 9 months til 2/2024, at which point I developed severe acid reflux, stopped Fosamax, dx'd with Barret's with no dysplasia, on Omeprazole 20 mg 1 a day and started Reclast 9/2024 after referral to a Rheumatologist-it was either that or Prolia. I'm having another Endoscopy this May for a recheck, GI did not convinced it's Barret's🤞.
Hoping it's not as I too am concerned about Omeprazole 's effect on bones. I was originally on Famotidine (aka Pepsid), but it wasn't as effective, but it's less problematic in terms of bone health per my PCP. It's been challenging dealing with both diagnoses, balancing diet and reflux.
I know what you're going through. The Fosamax seemed to trigger the reflux, but I was shocked by the Barret's and surprised by the Osteo dx.
