Real Ear Measurement/Live Speech Mapping

Posted by campo @campo, Mar 26, 2022

I am just about ready to purchase the Phonak R90 Paradise and after reading some of the posts have some mixed feelings but these are what is recommended by the audiologist.
My question being how important is it for the audiologist in adjusting the hearing aids to use Rear Ear Measurement or Live Speech Mapping. Is it a deal breaker if they do not use?

In my opinion it is a deal breaker if REM is not used. REM is better. Checkout Dr. Cliff, AuD on You Tube. He explains REM very well. just search Real Ear Measurement by Dr. Cliff. ( dr cliff and real ear measurement you tube video youtube). I have Paradise P90s and like them. Good Luck

I wholeheartedly agree. It is estimated that only about 1 out of 3 audiologists performs REM (Real Ear Measurements). Would you want your automobile mechanic to eye-ball tire pressures? BUT - understand that hearing aids only "restore" the lost hearing by about 50%. That means that the more severe your hearing loss, the more "residual" hearing loss you will have, even with optimally adjusted hearing instruments. For this reason be sure you ask questions about accessories (TV streamer, remote mic and the telecoil feature to access publicly installed assistive listening systems such as hearing loops. https://centerforaud.com/blog/real-ear-measurements-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-affect-hearing-aid-success

Real ear measurement is crucial. Google Doctor Cliff Olson in Phoenix and watch his video regarding that.

Real Ear Measurement is very important, and is the gold standard for proper fitting. While you're at it...be sure to insist on having telecoils in those hearing aids. They double the value of the product.

I often wonder what the relationship between the settings on the audiogram and Real Ear Measurement (REM). If there is a big difference does that indicate the inaccuracy of the audiogram when it is often difficult to know if you hesrd a beep or not?

I have seen several audiologists and I don’t think I have ever had Real Ear Measurement. Like someone said, just listening to beeps can be confusing. Did I really hear something? I often feel like I’m guessing.
I still have quite a lot of hearing, but it is distorted by hyperacusis and tinnitus. I wear Signia aids which help me hear my own voice, but frankly don’t help me hear others too much. I have very “muffled” hearing.
I haven’t watched the video mentioned yet. I will see if that explains anything for me.
Suggestions from posters is appreciated.
