Rash around the stoma

Posted by khalberstadt42 @khalberstadt42, May 27 12:40pm

Has anyone or does anyone have a rash around their stoma and what have or had you done to make it better or go away? I have a rash that will not go away and have tried several different things with no success in getting rid of the rash. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
Is it a rash, or excoriation? If it’s a rash it could be from contact dermatitis from sensitivity to the appliance. Or is it excoriation from stool on the skin? Treatment is different depending on the issue.

So far no doctor can figure this out, I’ve tried many things including a steroid spray which does eventually clear it up at a high cost but then it returns.

It is a really bad rash that itches like poison ivy when I take off the bag. I have tried the new appliance approach but I need a bag that is deep convex that doesn't irritate the skin. I don't think they have such a bag out there yet and so wish they did. Thanks for your reply!

I didn't even try the spray because they told me it wouldn't let the bag stick if used. Do you use a deep convex bag? Thanks for the reply!

This is the pouch I use…

Apply a non-sting skin prep to your skin every time you apply a new appliance.

Coloplast makes a deep convex barrier with a click mechanism for the bag that might help you. Also, I have found that the Cavillon no sting barrier wipes are helpful.

I have had great luck with the colorplast mio flex convex barrier that is shaped like a star. It sticks far better and covers less skin so I rarely get a rash I use the closed end pouch but it does come in a drainable If you call they will send you a sample

Khalberstadt42, is the soreness directly around the stoma, where the stomahesive sits, or around the outside where the tape border sits?

Monkeywings, the picture above looks like either a reaction to the tape border on the appliance, or moisture induced dermatitis. Sometimes I get that if I wear the appliance too long (14days). When I get that I clean a dry the area then apply a light dusting of Desenex, then dab a skin prep wipe over that, air dry and put the appliance on.

If it’s sore because of a reaction to the tape border on the appliance, you’ll need to find an appliance that won’t irritate your skin.
