Radio Frequency Ablation - Barretts Esophagus
After decades of acid reflux, and taking “tums” and even drinking a baking soda mixture, I was diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus some 10 years ago— I had trouble swallowing food and even saliva.
After an initial dilation of the esophagus under sedation, I have had regular endoscopies and biopsies to monitor for esophageal cancer, all of the biopsy results have concluded “no dysplasia”. I have also been on 40mg Omeprazole since the initial diagnosis.
I now have a new GI doctor, and I like the way that he explains things better and looks at new methods of dealing with GI stuff. One of these new methods has been to send a biopsy sample for a “Tissue Cypher” test- the results came back last week indicating that I had a “very high” probability of developing pre-cancerous cells in the future. He now is talking to me about Radio Frequency Ablation, which removes the “Barretts cells” and allows new normal cells to develop.
He mentioned that I will be under considerable pain for a week or so after the first of likely 3 ablations (I have long Barretts), and will be on a liquid diet for a week or so after the procedure. I’m wondering if anyone here has had this procedure and has any advice, such as how to manage pain and a liquid diet? Thanks.

I was diagnosed with asymptomatic Barrett’s esophagus with minor dysplasia in 2020 after having trouble swallowing. I had several (3-4) RFA treatments and my last annual endoscopy in 2022 came back with no evidence of Barrett’s. My 5- year endoscopy is now scheduled for late 2026
Worked out great for me. Great Doctor. No pain at all Minimal discomfort.
I have been on 20 mg omeprazole daily since 2018
Hope everything works out for you

1 Reaction@mgamga2003 Thanks so much for your reply. Your experience gives me hope for what sounded like a torturous procedure. Great that you are Barrett’s free, that’s a great achievement and my goal as well.
How long was there in between RFA treatments? I assume an endoscopy in between treatments too, to measure progress by the GI doctor?
Thanks again!
I cannot recall the exact time between RFA treatments but lit might have been a month or two to allow healing. I believe I had three RFAs.
No “monitoring” endoscopies were done until a year after the final RFA. (Each RFA was essentially an endoscopy with an ablation tool) The doctor would assess during each treatment the ablated area until there was no longer evidence of Barrett’s (in my case the third RFA) )
Thanks, much appreciated.
