Question about colds and flu

Posted by cyndsan @cyndsan, 22 hours ago

I have been on the big 3 for MAC and Pseudomonas since May. I was having some bad possible side effects so I asked my Dr if I could stop the pills for a week and start again. I took my last pills Wed night, I woke on Thurs with a cough like i had when I first got sick, and then had body aches. I thought maybe I got a cold or flu as it seems quite fast to have symptoms after stopping the day before. It is Friday now and I still feel badly. Would it help if I want back on? I hate to bother my Dr yet again.
Thank you.

@cyndsan Ugh! I don't think there is any way being off meds for a day led to your current illness - more likely you have a virus of some sort.

We're you being treated for Pseudomonas as well as MAC? When I was first diagnosed I had both infections, and my pulmonologist treated the pseudo for over 2 months before starting meds for MAC. He said I was important to deal with it first as it doesn't respond to the Big 3.

Do you think maybe the Pseudomonas is causing your symptoms, and maybe even what you are thinking are side effects?

Also, PLEASE get past the idea that you are "bothering " your doctor- their role is to help you get better.

How are you feeling this evening?

Ditto to what Sue said. As a matter of fact, I know my ID doc and his entire team here at UMN/Mayo-Rochester would be livid if I ever said anything about being a "bother". They spent a lot of money and time in medical schools, and must continue/update their educations to keep their licenses. As a retired medical scientist, we health-care workers thrive on helping others. You are not a bother!

Sorry you got sick right when taking a quick break from the meds. It might be worth getting one of the test kits for both flu and Covid to rule that out? If a cold it won’t show up but could be helpful to determine what’s causing your symptoms. I understand your concern about not being a bother too however reporting symptoms and concerns can help piece together all the puzzle pieces in this complex issue.

Thank you for all of your input. I was on Ciprofloxacin for 2 weeks as well, but down to the Big 3 after that. I first had nausea, but started taking the pills at night. Recently, I started getting major bruising which I know happens when you age, and then migraines, which I used to get but take CBD oil for. I asked if I could stop the pills for a week and he said yes. I think it is the flu but it seems odd as I am at my cottage on a (large) island, but my family left here from Monday to Thursday, later in the day. I can' t figure out where I would have gotten the flu, it is mostly body aches so I am taking advil and tylenol which helps. I will go back on the pills Monday. Thank you all.

@cyndsan Hope you feel better soon. Definitely keep up with airway clearance at least 2x day.
