Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Cutibacterium acnes sinus infection

Posted by jraengr @jraengr, Jul 12 9:11am

I've had a sinus infection fornover 2-1/2 years with pseudomonas aeruginosa and Cutibacterium acnes. Have been taking various sinus rinse and oral antibiotics and currently meropenem by IV for 4 weeks and still have not been able to completely get rid of it. Any suggestions?

I am so sorry and very worried for you. I got bacterial meningitis of my brain from chronic sinusitis in May 2014. The organisms were pseudomonas and mrsa. I received kerosene daptomycin flatly many cephalosporins. Antibiotics of last resort. A craniotomy was done to remove abcess in my left temporal lobe. I was septic in multi organ failure intubated on a vent in medically induced coma. My heart stopped and I was coded. I use a sinus rinse like you with 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar. I found out 13 arms of my immune system were deficient. I got 5 years of allergy shots plus various vaccines to bolster my immune system. I was hospitalized for 30 days then discharged to a nursing home. I barely missed being admitted to long tetm acute care because my bacterial load was high and the staff were unsure if it would go down . I was 53. Today I am 64. I run an air purifier 24/7 I filter my water. I had to pull many chemicals from my life style. I walk talk drive. I have 2 pitbulls who are my legal ESAs. I married again left my life long home state and moved to NM. I have ptsd. I had a lot of medical care after discharge from nursing home. Many prescriptions were tapered down in dose and stopped as my health improved. I have a seizure risk from the craniotomy but have remained seizure free. One of the hardest parts of my recovery was realizing I was a codependent never said no had no boundaries My famiky was dysfunctional so I was taught patterns of behavior that lead to me wearing myself out. I am a retired nurse. Was RN. I wore myself out caring for my first husband who was a online porn addict. Yes I had a lot of therapy too. It is important to me to remember I count and I matter. My last sinus infection was 2015. I thought I had another infection in 2016 . My ENT did a culture. Said all clear. I had to take care of dental issues too. Now I get dental cleanings every 4 months. I am a good house cleaner now so I can minimize my exposure to allergens. I use a hepa vaccuum with an enclosed dust bag..Do have an ENT doctor? An allgerist- immunologist? My experience and recovery is extensive but this whole experience was worth it. It was life changing. Take care of you. I advise exhausting every avenue to stop your infection before it is too late. Interestingly my paternal grandfather was hit in his head developed epilepsy and died at age 43.

Sorry. Typos. The antibiotics used for me for daptomycin meropenem flagl a whole host of cepalosporins. FYI I don't take antibiotics now. We have lost the war for many due to AMR. Antimicrobial resistance.

Sinus infections can be very difficult to cure because the bacteria can hide in so many places. And pseudomonas aeuringosa has become resistant to many antibiotics.
Have you been seen by infectious disease specialist? And have they cultured the bacteria to see which antibiotics it is susceptible to? Sometimes ID docs have additional tools in their arsenal.

Dear KB: Wow is all I can say. You have courage and guts for sure. I wonder why you chose NM? Any research on where would be best to live with allergies and sinus ? I am in high desert of AZ and it's definitely NOT DRY here. Trees and Pines all over. Thinking about relocation. Best wishes to you. B

I remarried so moved here with my husband. First thing I experienced was living at 6000 plus feet. Dizzy tired. I adjusted. Lots of dust here. But it is beautiful . Therapeutic healing.

I have no advice about an area that is more friendly to us allergy suffers. On my phone are apps where I monitor the air quality allergens in the air humidity.

Dear jraengr, I am currently working on a Psuedomonas aurengusa infection from Feb. 2023. I have been on a similar path as yours. Many oral antibiotics that only slowed it down. I have used genetemycin in my oral rinse for 3 months. When that failed to get rid of the infection, I was sent to ID doctors who put me on cefepeim(61 doses). It helped. Then I had surgery (11/2023) to remove infected flesh. By December it was declared clear. At the followup in Feb.2024, I was infected again. I put manuka honey into my sinuses. I told the doc all about it and it was cleared up. I continued to use sterile rinses. In April 2025 I was diagnosed with UTI and pneumonia caused by Klebesella peunominae. My sinuses were like a faucet turned on which is very rare for me. I usually had so much swelling and stuffiness. I went to my ENT who found K. Peumoniae. It was treated by levofloxin in my sinuses rinse. It cleared up, but upon a recent followup Pseudomonas was found again. I am still using ceprofoxin in my rinse. I am ready to go back to using manuka honey. The worst part of this is that I had a very serious impacted infection in 1984 where the culture showed Pseudomonas, Hemaphilus B., and Strep,a. Only the Pseudomonus has showed up again after 40 years.
