Any experiences with Provenge immunotherapy for prostate cancer?

Posted by sm0534 @sm0534, Nov 16, 2023

I have advanced stage of prostate cancer which has spread to other parts of my body like neck and chest. Oncologist recommended Provenge immunotherapy and I followed up with it.
Unfortunately after 6 months, PET scan shows new cells forming in those areas. Apparently Provenge hasn't worked and money has been wasted on this very expensive drug.
Does anybody have experience with Provenge and what would be my next steps. I have been taking Lupron and I tried XTANDI for which I had severe side effects

I have completed my 3 treatments. After my 1st treatment I blacked out. So for the 2nd and 3rd treatment I had the wait time extended an additional hour. Im currently scheduled to have a PET scan 12-30-25, you se if thr treatment gained ground with cancer in my bone . I keep my fingers crossed

Don’t expect any immediate changes due to Provenge, That just isn’t how it works. In the long-term, it should give you longer progression free survival And overall survival.

@kjbushur and @majed, I moved your questions about Provenge (sipuleucel-T), a personalized immunotherapy for advanced, asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic prostate cancer to this related discussion:
- Any experiences with Provenge immunotherapy for prostate cancer?https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/provenge-effectiveness/

I did this so you can connect with others members like @sm0534 @juangui @nishok @kayakbob @austin7 @lorenze76 @newby82 who have experience with Provenge.

@majed, has Provenge been recommened as the next treatment for your husband?

@kjbushur, how is treatment going for you?

@kjbushur I had Provenge 8 years ago and it really didn't anything that I'm aware of. Went on Zytiga which drove up my liver function. Stopped that then went to Xtandi for 7 years. It kept my PSA down. PSA started increasing and this April I started Pluvicto, just completed my final injection. PSA went from 8 to undetectable. See how long this will last but it looks promising.

I had Provenge 7 years ago. Slight lowering of PSA but difficult to know the ultimate benefit as most therapies that I’ve done show a median 3 month survival benefit.
Having done all hormonal interventions, radium 223, lutetium 177, docetaxel several radiations tx for localized bone mets after 23 years of stage 4 cancer after surgery I’m now doing cabazetaxel.
I’m still alive but not for long with diffuse bony mets and now in liver the question with most treatments is weighing risk benefit and that is always a difficult challenge with unknown ultimate benefit for every man as we are the ultimate decision maker. Can oncologists ever decide to do nothing?

@greglynch7
Have they offered to include Carboplatin Along with your cabazetaxel. When the case gets more serious, that can help slow or stop the cancer.

Something to discuss with your doctor.
