Prostatectomy And Incontinence: When can I expect it to improve?

Posted by surveyr @surveyr, Jan 6 8:38pm

Anyone have any experience with incontinence 2 weeks after prostatectomy.
I have read lot of men have little to no incontinence after prostatectomy.
I had NS Robotic Prostatectomy 2 weeks ago At Mayo but my incontinence is very bad and actually appears to be getting gradually worse each day. Obviously gravity is my friend at night but after I get up it returns with a vengeance.
All the information that I received from care team was to do the exercises but that hasn’t done anything to improve my issues

Incontinence after surgery varies considerably. Some people have none, or very little. Others get serious incontinence that goes on for weeks or months. It usually recovers, But there are no guarantees in prostate cancer treatment.

You can get a clamp, I use the Weisner clamp available on Amazon. Can only wear it for about two hours without repositioning it, but that gives some relief.

There are other solutions, but it is too soon for you to consider them. It could start getting better in the next few months.

Some people get the sling, there is Bulkamid, and the AUS artificial urinary sphincter an implanted device that has a button in your scrotum to press to pee.

Give it time.

I've had total incontinence since my RP Feb. 2021. Two AUS surgeries have failed. The best product I have found that lets me function half way normally is Men's Liberty. I hope in time you get your control back, but in the mean time I would look into this product.
Good Luck TE

Thanks for the reply!
But at this point I definitely regret my decision.
Really discouraged about future dealing with this daily. I sure hope I can let more men know about the incontinence since the doctor was very vague about it.

Don't be discouraged yet. You're only two weeks in,and incontinence is to expected at this point. At four weeks you should be starting physical therapy. They told me that 70% of men regain all or most of they're control back around 12 weeks post RP.My younger brother had RP about 15 years ago.He still works every day and gets by with only a thin pad with minimal leakage. You're very early in your post RP journey,Give the PT your best shot and stay positive. And I don't want to sound like a commercial, but if you get sick of those soggie disgusting pads, I'd look into the men's liberty product if you're insurance will cover it. Hang in there and good luck, TE

Incontinence two weeks after surgery is expected, depending upon many factors including age and muscle fitness. Assuming that you started Kegel exercises before RP and then continued post catheter removal, I recommend ensuring that you are performing the exercises correctly with the recommended frequency and then look for gradual improvement during the next 12 weeks. Best techniques can be provided by a therapist that specializes in Kegels for PC patients and a few YouTube videos from specialists specifically addressing post RP Kegels and other physical therapy techniques. As others have written, everyone is different and there are other treatments for incontinence if physical therapy does not help. Please let us know how you progress, so that others can help with next steps advice. Best wishes for the best possible outcome in your PC journey.

At the beginning of 2023, I underwent radical prostatic cancer surgery, and it is just two years since I lost urinary incontinence after removing the urinary catheter. I have been doing Kegel exercises and pelvic floor muscles, but the space in the pelvic cavity is too large, urinary incontinence is still 70-80%. I'm thinking of using a vacuum stick to increase the length and circumference of the penis.

Pelvic Floor PT for Kegels with a qualified physical therapist was very helpful for me and very successful for continence.
Best wishes for recovery.

It took me 9 weeks to gain total control again. Way too soon at 2 weeks to be giving up! Do your kegels and you will come out ok.
