Thanks, JC76, that was great information and it has always been my understanding that the new proton radiation equipment would be used in a variety of ways including prostate cancer. I’m on my way this morning for my fourth dose of Radium 223 and will ask the radiology/ oncology docs about it. Maybe he can give me an update!
So, I spoke with Dr. Parent, my radiation oncologist, and he implied that the proton radiation could, and would be used for prostate cancer if indicated! However, more importantly, he said that in the same building where the proton radiation will be available, Mayo Jacksonville is going to bring in CIRT (carbon ion radiation therapy) currently only available in Europe and Asia and apparently with significant advantages and success. We will be the first facility in the United States to offer this type of radiation, I’m guessing it will be 1 to 2 years before the building and the equipment for these two treatment modalities will be available. From what little research I’ve done so far it appears that CIRT will be able to deliver high-dose radiation to specific sites with very minimal side effects. To me, this is an exciting option for prostate cancer patients going forward! Stay tuned!
